Dyan Kane
Guns. Drugs. Booze. Broads. Cheaters. Liars. Broken bones. Broken dreams. Dead thugs in black Cadillac car trunks. Washington DC you ask? Nope. Just a typical day her childhood hometown, 'Nort' Providence, Rhode Island, where working-class heroes STILL hi-five to Mob rule, the Catholic church and a good Italian meatball. What doesn't kill ya.... NYC native DYAN KANE grew up in her Nana’s Providence, Rhode Island house, where music saved her soul. Too young to drive, she bussed to The New England Conservatory of Music, where classes in piano, guitar, acting and voice were taught. At the University of Rhode Island and the Trinity Square Conservatory, she honed performance chops through scholarships and grants, then moved to NYC & sang Jazz Standards on the streets and subways between acting gigs. One thing lead to another, and Dyan found herself at the United Nations, performing DREAM, an original Jazz/Pop tune dedicated to children of dysfunctional homes. Years of cocktailing at NYC's legendary Blue Note Jazz Club brought her face to face with iconic legends like Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, Betty Carter, Carmen McRae, Oscar Peterson, Quincy Jones, Ahmad Jamal, Freddie Hubbard, Al Jarreau, Stanley Turrentine, her idol Dianne Reeves, and DOZENS more, who shared tips on style, nuance, presentation, musicianship and good old hard work. She wrote a few original pop tunes and put together a 10 piece band called CITIZEN KANE, (7 musicians, 3 backup singers/dancers), and booked gigs at Bitter End, China Club. She was signed to the International Bad Boyz Label as Citizen Kane, and performed her signature song "Excuse Me" in dance clubs around the tri-state area, Canada, and England. opening for 2 legends of Club Music - Taanya Gardner (Heartbeat) and Barbara Tucker (Beautiful People). Birdland began calling regularly, and it was then she began leaning more towards Jazz. Later, she signed to a London music company named Rose Rouge, but the deal went nowhere. Disappointed, she flew to a wedding in Malibu, and never looked back. In LA, between fires, earthquakes and lulls in film & tv work, Dyan continues to work with some of the best. A seasoned Stage, Film and TV actress, her acting chops serve to bring a fresh, emotional depth and dimension to her vocal delivery (see IMDB or www.dyankane.com). Her improvisational, chance-taking approach can be heard on her first self-produced CD, 'DYATRIBE' for INTERPLAY RECORDS (Itunes, Amazon, Spotify) which features the great and gifted soul pianist Robert Turner, and grammy artists Ryan Cross/Bass & Lyndon Rochelle/Drums. Her 2nd CD "Tooth & Nail" will feature Robert Turner, grammy nominated Victor Orlando and Flutist Louis van Taylor. Influences include Dianne Reeves, Diana Krall, Erykah Badu, Al Jarreau, Angie Stone and Jill Scott. Persevere. Never give up. Ya can't win if ya don't play. Study. Keep stretching. Listen. Learn. Be humble.
