Pete Waller, aka DeafboyOne, was a 14-year-old boy who loved music. He was always singing and playing his guitar, and he dreamed of one day being a famous musician. But one day, in a freak accident, Pete's dreams were shattered. Pete was in the school courtyard when he was suddenly slapped on both ears by a fellow pupil. The force of the slaps ruptured Pete's eardrums, and he was left with perforations and partially Deafened. Pete was devastated. He couldn't believe that he would never be able to hear music again. He withdrew from his friends and family, and he stopped playing his guitar. But then, one day, Pete heard a song on the radio that changed his life. The song was “Starman” by David Bowie. The song was about an alien who wanted to meet us, but worried he’d blow our minds. Pete was inspired by the song, and he decided to start playing his guitar again. He taught himself how to play using Sign Language, and he started writing his own songs. Pete eventually formed his own band, called if...UK. The band became very successful, and Pete became a well-known musician. He used his platform to raise awareness about Deafness, and he inspired other Deaf people to follow their dreams. He used his Sign Name given to him by clients of his Music Therapy class “DeafboyOne” Pete Waller is an inspiration to us all. He showed us that even when life throws us curveballs, we can still overcome them and achieve our dreams.
