Entertainment presents Merchandise, The Young, Wiccans $8/$10 cover8pm doorsThe members of Tampa, Florida post-punk trio Merchandise hail from the city's ethos-first hardcore community, having performed in such groups as Cult Ritual and Neon Blud. That background helps explain how, despite their romantic, pop-oriented aesthetic, they've amassed a cult following in the punk underground, but it also speaks to the place of intensity from which they come-- channeled most thoroughly on "Time", a standout off their recent full-length Children of Desire. Their strongest song since forming in 2007, "Time" does much with contrast, coupling piercing, sun-burned swaths of noise alongside a sweeping, melodic guitar line, textured electronic drums, and poetic vocal tones a la Edwyn Collins.The band uses its dissonance and rhythm to acheive something euphoric and undeniable, and that sense of juxtaposition also manifests itself lyrically. Vocalist Carson Cox sings of embracing a lover to just kill time as he acknowledges youth and watches it slip away. There is a sense of retrospection without nostalgia, a feeling of self-depreciation and reflection on yesterday's nightmares and ill-fated loves.
