James Robert Webb
Music’s ability to heal is increasingly being acknowledged in the health community. Its ability to connect a hospitalized patient to the hope of the outside world or to help a senior with dementia re-link neuro pathways is not entirely understood, but researchers know of music’s power. So does James Robert Webb, a working physician who recognizes music’s restorative presence in his own world. A trained radiologist whose primary practice is repairing fractured vertebrae, he frequently sees wheelchair-bound adults able to walk after a single procedure. And as a singer with an incisive, classic-country voice, he’s seen hardened listeners rediscover joy after recognizing themselves in a surging chorus or in an emotional lyric. Whether he’s using a scalpel or a G-chord, Webb is all about rejuvenating his clients. That includes a single person in a hospital gown or thousands of folks in jeans on an amphitheater lawn. “As a human doctor working with other people, I can do a procedure and make a huge impact in one person's life,” Webb says. “But if you write a song that touches millions of people, you're making a difference in another way, putting more love out to the world.” Both pursuits take years to perfect, and while a diploma and a license are big certifications for doctors, albums and associations are key touchstones for musicians. The Tulsa-bred Webb began work in 2018 on his fourth studio album, recording for indie Bison Creek Records with the aid of legendary record producer Buddy Cannon (Kenny Chesney, Willie Nelson). Webb has already shared stages with the likes of Rascal Flatts, The Charlie Daniels Band, Montgomery Gentry and Big & Rich. Webb’s music is built on strong foundations. The songs are melodically focused, bolstered by traditional Nashville word play and by Webb’s own vocal sound, a rich baritone with a vulnerable, guy-next-door quality. He’s convicted in “I Was The One,” playful in “April May” and reflective in “Think About It.” The project’s first single, “Now We’re Getting Somewhere,” is relentlessly spirited, between its driving musical chassis, its tangy steel rides and Webb’s exuberant performance.
