Accordion troubadour Jason Webley is bringing his band and a van full of autumnal fun to Wow Hall on Halloween night. Known around the planet for his passionate live performances and his infectious dark whimsy, Webley promises that this will be a show to remember.
"I used to do these crazy shows every year in Seattle around Halloween with a big band, ridiculous props, puppets and stories. For me, those shows were the culmination of my year and were always held together by some kind of mad poetry. The idea this year is to try to take a show like that on the road."
Webley will be joined on stage by long-time collaborators Jherek Bischoff (bass), Alex Guy (viola) and Michael McQuilken (drums) and the night will be opened by local favorites Mood Area 52. He won't say more about what he has planned for the night, but if past antics are any indicator there may be some glorious mischief. Known for ritually killing his stage persona every year for much of his career, Webley once led an army of fans onto a local commuter ferry dressed as pirates and was arrested for leading another crowd into the fountain at Seattle's Bumbershoot Festival.
Wow Hall is located at 291 West 8th Ave. The concert begins at 8 pm on Monday, October 31st. Tickets are $12 or $10 in advance from www.ticketweb.com.
Costumes are very welcome, but concert goers might also want to also bring something warm. You never know where the night will take you…
In the summer of 1998, JASON WEBLEY left his day job and began playing accordion on the streets of Seattle. Since then Webley has performed everywhere from Siberia to Tasmania. He has released six albums and numerous collaborations on his own record label and has shared the stage with performers such as The Avett Brothers, Devotchka and Regina Spektor. Webley also organizes the annual Monsters of Accordion tour and is one half of the duo Evelyn Evelyn (with Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls.) At the end of 2011, Webley will be taking an extended break from touring, making this special Halloween show the last chance to catch him in San Francisco for a long while.
Founded by accordionist Michael Roderick, MOOD AREA 52 is a Piazzola inspired neo-tango ensemble. With Amy Danziger on cello and a rotating cast of talented friends, the group incorporates new tango, lounge, electronica, Eastern European influences, Brechtian cabaret tunes, chanson, and original compositions. Roderick and company sing about love, loss, genetic mutations and daring women in petticoats. They have performed everywhere from Bach festivals to Alzheimer's units. They are performing at the Portland and Eugene concerts.
