Customer Review!!! Pretty High-Energy Tight Debut Album, May 26, 2012 By Mike TurpinAmazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Locust (MP3 Download) This is a very tight debut release. This is not typically my cup of tea stylistically, but there is a maturity and musicianship here that transcends the norm in most modern indie rock (If you can even call this "indie-rock??) This is noisier than pop, catchier than grunge, more straight-forward than pure alternative acts. You can tell non of the members are too stuck on one style of music. It wouldn't surprise me if the band member's individual favorite bands were Led Zeppelin, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Meat Puppets, and Journey... not because they sound too much like that, but because they clearly aren't "above" playing any style or taking influence from any era/genre. You can really hear EXACTLY what I'm speaking of on their title track, "Locust." The bass line to start sounds like something typical of the Pixies, then the song starts as an upbeat pop/rock song. The singer then starts to wail out a bit as the rest of the band gives backing singing that blends well. The drummer slowly starts adding some fills, the guitarist starts to foreshadow what is about to come with some neat twang and picking-- then, not too suddenly (at about the 1.45 mark) there is a sonic/noisy sound building from the guitar at a fast pace and the drummer is rolling like a maniac. This then turns into a solo based around the songs melody, which leads into a much faster, higher energy version of a previous section of the song-- singer is wailing out and the guitarist is blending the solo around and under perfectly, even offering a short Peter Frampton sounding lick imitating the vocalist's singing and melody... Okay, do you get the point??? You can do this with EVERY SONG!!! The transitions, variety, and energy are great. One of the best parts to me, is how everything fits together and the instrumentation is aware of the song's continuity/melody. For instance, while the solos may be flashy, they are not out of place or randomly interjected before the final chorus. While you might pick up on the band's general approach, it doesn't fit the typical formula of any genre of music. It is not just 3 sections of music verse/bridge/chorus placed in an order and sounding identical each time. Okay, enough already, if you enjoy the high energy of the 90s and hate pretentious modern music, you just might be happy you bought this album!
