“Pink Narcissus are a raucous soundwall of dirty riffs, trashy drums, and booming bass. Vocalist Oli Spleen, pouting and glaring as he struts and pirouettes across the stage, is all about the attitude, while the instrumentalists play like it’s the last time they ever will. Dark, twisted melodies are woven into the barrage of distortion, and despite the inherent angst in the songs, the performance is lively, fun, and careless in the best of ways. The instrumentalists’ energy is such that though they somewhat drown out their singer, secret intricacies and dynamics rise to the surface in the instrumentation. Their newer numbers display an exciting, youthful freshness, ‘Baron Wolf’ being a particular standout.”

“Forming from different walks of life and eclectic music tastes, Brighton’s own Pink Narcissus take influence from everything from David Bowie to Iggy and the Stooges to Queens of the Stone Age for their experimental rock sound or “freak rock” as it has been previously called. Their latest track, Home, was released back in June of 2014 and has been featured on both our SM Radar and Mixtape features purely because we love the track so very much. On Home, the rip-roaring guitar riffs bring the song crashing into a lilting first verse, the lyrics flowing over the cascading guitars before rocketing into a massive anthemic chorus that would no doubt be a rager at any live gig. Despite how hard the song rages, the wistful tone of the lyrical content – which is all about longing for home – seems a striking contrast to the larger-than-life quality of the melody. It automatically grabs the listener’s ear with its earnest tonality.”

“Whilst, PN wear their influences on their sleeves: a bit of Nirvana here, a bit of Bowie there, they retain their own cohesive sound, which effortlessly merges 90s grunge with the pomposity of 70s glam-rock. The semi-catatonic Great Divide recalls woozy mornings after sleepless heavy nights, the stench of beer and nicotine still lingering, ears still ringing, while the shuffling Yield to the Night, peppered with sparks of Paddy Longlegs‘ guitar, closes the album with unabashed sex appeal from an increasingly unhinged Spleen.”

Blood on the Page, opens without fanfare into the spitting Victim, a bloodied and bruised call to arms for those suffering prejudice; it’s a rip-roaring riff-filled gem filled with suitably off-kilter vocals by eccentric front man Oli Spleen. The posturing Spleen’s decadent delivery counters the biting music of the cool Traps, a trippy number with a sardonic vocal and a great hook before tearing into the first single, Orphan Eyes, a swashbuckling alternative dance-floor-ready glamathon, the driving verses leading to a swirling chorus of fuzzy guitars.”

They flit effortlessly between sounding like Nirvana to The Cure, Iggy Pop back to Queens of the Stone Age. The record is drenched, sounding huge and open, whilst tightening at crucial focal points when all elements collide to a killer riff. That said, the overall cohesion of ‘Blood on the Page’ is artistic, unique and unmistakably Pink Narcissus. In a modern world where retro rules, PN exist effortlessly in both worlds, and yet are unlike anything else. The who’s the where’s and the why’s are on plain display, but this is really just a band doing what they do, doing it because the love doing it, and doing it well. ”

However chaotic their innumerable gigs become, the band’s glam-punk sound has only grown sharper. “‘Disinfectant’ is a hurricane of a track and was expertly complemented by the video. Taking Edgar Allan Poe’s short story ‘The Masque Of The Red Death’ as inspiration, Trushna has again worked with Oli Spleen and rest of the band to produce an dark and haunting music video for the track ‘Masquerade’. With a masked ball as its theme, the video is a particularly flamboyant production featuring a range of colourful freaks and drag queens. Despite the elaborate designs of some costumes and masks, the wearing of masks succeeds in hiding most traces of emotion in the party goers’ faces, thereby creating a rather menacing atmosphere.”

“Disinfectant” by Pink Narcissus is an incredible, startling, and well written piece of music from the first note to the very last. Having an undoubtable parallel with the last part of “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac the song could easily be mistaken as part of their own back catalogue. “Disinfectant” is one of the best songs on this playlist, with elements that remind the listener of Pink Floyd as well as Fleetwood Mac, it has notes of more modern musicians and bands like The Red Hot Chilli Peppers of whom the vocals greatly resemble. If Pink Narcissus have more songs like this in their arsenal it would be hardly surprising to see them amongst the greats one day.”

“Pink Narcissus pull the ears in to focus with Days, a frenetic lyric is flawlessly encased in a carefully crafted tempo, urged forward with ever increasing urgency by understated percussion. Come Crawling gets the audience to savour a piece which has all the elements of musical Bauhaus construction. Defined, functional yet immensely creative and experimental. Heading to Glam-Rock territory Doomed, makes me want to see this band live. Syphilitic City, is an intricate track, vocals through muted megaphone and guitars exposing every note to inspection. This is a piece of music, which demands the highest standards of skill and Pink Narcissus ably demonstrate their ability to perform at the highest level. We draw to the end of the release with Thundercloud. Anthemic – a stunning piece of music which engages the listener on a variety of levels. Cerebral activity is activated and the heart is filled with a good feeling, not to mention that all essential waving arm and swaying body.”

“Latterly I have begun to despair about the lack of many interesting and engaging contemporary male vocalists. Oli Spleen’s voice reassures me that there is still hope yet. On successive hearings the complexity, depth and ability became more evident and engaging. [Syphilitic City] guides the listener through a sonic urban landscape, the lyrical imagery definitely adds to the dark atmosphere. Although it’s style is completely different I did find myself thinking that this could be The Specials’ ‘Ghost Town’, reworked to account for the different concerns of the 21st century.”

“The last time we reviewed a PN release, we were impressed by the scratchy and dissolute, don’t-give-a-fuck attitude that spewed from the speakers. With this latest EP, the balls are still there in spades but, boy, have they dropped. There’s a decidedly commercial air about these latest songs; a rounder production that takes the deliciously doomy pessimism of the band and confuses any previous notions of what radio-friendly means. Shades of Jane’s Addiction and 80s Matchbox bleed through, in what amounts to the band’s best work to date by a mile.”
