June Newsletter

6/7/2010 Welcome to Summer! I'm happy to say that Summer Festival Season is already here. Last month I spent my first nights outdoors and brought my band to a Volkswagen Bus Festival called Buses by the Beach. Almost 100 Volkswagen Buses lined up at the end of the weekend and caravaned around town for a bit. It was quite a sight to see. And this past weekend was Grand Rapids 41st annual Festival of the Arts. We played as a string band on the Outer Fringe Stage on Saturday night and packed that little tent! I was happy to see all the kids dancing in the grass and swinging around. There are few things finer than live music outdoors. I also played at a charity event this weekend for an organization called Spread-The-Music. What these people do is amazing. Last year they gave away over 500 instruments to children of all ages. They are a non-profit organization whose philosophy is that any child that wants an instrument should be able to get one. The show was fun. It was at a super posh nightclub in Holland called the Sol Lounge. The place had a great sound system and vibe, and there was a killer lineup too, including myself, Karisa Wilson, Greg Nagy, and Donald Kinsey (the legendary guitarist for Bob Marley) and several others. On July 10th the Spread the Music Foundation is putting on a series of events in Grand Haven including Loud on the Lawn where children of all ages are invited to come down to the park and play any instrument they want. Instructors will be on hand and prizes will be given away all day long. This is a really cool organization and I'm really glad I got involved with them. I will not be at this event but look forward to many events in the future. Please take some time to check out their website and help them out if you can. Also, if you know someone who may need their help please spread the word (and Spread-The-Music!) www.Spread-The-Music.org Okay, so the newsletter is a little late this month. What can I say? I've been busy! =) Here's whats left: June 19th – Founders Fest 3-11pm featuring Lotus, Frontier Ruckus, The Wildfire, Greensky Bluegrass, The Riley Brothers, the FBC Allstars and more. I am a member of the FBC Allstars (damn right I am!) You gotta be 21+. Cuz everyone is gonna get drunk in the street and dance all night and you don't want your kids around that. You want to get a babysitter so you can get drunk and dance too! June 26th – Z's Open Mic Finals We are coming to a close on the $1000 Cash prize for Z's Open Mic. We've been slowly but surely registering folks over the last year and are about to start whittling them down to a final few who will perform on Saturday, June 26th. There is also a $500 2nd prize and a $250 3rd prize. I'll be playing that night as well because I am the host of Z's Open Mic and have been for almost 4 years now. Every Monday night at 11pm. Come and sing for us sometime. Next Month: Blissfest - July 9, 10 and 11. I'll be open micing and song treeing and minstreling my way around all weekend. Hemlock Music Festival – July 23, 24 and 25. In the beautiful Manistee National Forest. Very small family friendly folky festival. I have a good feeling that this summer will be warm and filled with many sunny weekends. I hope to see you soon! Much love, nik Don't forget you can see me every Monday at Z's Open Mic and every Tuesday at Founders Open Mic!

Barefoot and the month of April

Hello! Well folks here it is! Barefoot, my debut full length album will be officially released on April 22nd at Founders Brewing Co. The album was recorded at Academic Audio in Grand Rapids and produced by Greg Baxter and myself. Nine of the best musicians I've ever worked with make appearances on the album. Thank you to Greg Baxter, Greg Louck, Bruce Ling, Joe VanAcker, Jen Wilson, Russ Brakefield, Pete Weatherhead, Nathan Kalish and Mark “Huggy Bear” Lavengood for your musical talents. This record is what it is because of the love and energy each musician brought with them to the recording studio. I couldn't be more pleased with the way the album turned out. I also feel it's important to say thank you to Alynn Guerra who created the magnificent cover art. The album is a collection of 11 songs. A lot of them were written over the past year and you can see my life happening through these songs. There are stories for all the songs of course, and the songs tell a story themselves. The record begins at home and ends with family and I am walking the path with my bare feet singing the stories along the way. Busy Busy Busy! In the month of April I will be all over the place singin, playin and promotin the release. Catch me here, catch me there!: Thursday, April 8th WOOD TV 8's 8 West. The show airs at 11am. Coming soon. . .

All kinds of good things in the works! First of all, Barefoot, my first full length solo album is finished and will be released on April 22nd at Founders Brewing Co. Yippie! Also, my new website will be up and running about the same time. Bookmark it now: www.nicholasjamesthomasma.com And my car is in the shop right now getting fixed up with a new transmission. The engine is rebuilt too so now I have a new tranny and a new engine. That means lots and lots of future miles for that little Subaru. I was worried for a while that I might have to live in that car but. . . I'm moving home! That's right all you westsiders, I'll be returning to the neighborhood before the tulips bloom and sayin goodbye to the suburbs. My new place is bigger, is owned by my aunt and uncle and is closer to most of the people I love. It even has a fire pit "so you and your buddies can jam" is how my uncle put it. Breakfast at the Westsider Cafe anyone? Catch me live in studio at 88.1fm WYCE on Tuesday March 23rd from noon til 3. I'll be guest Dj with KC and singing some songs of my own too. We'll be trying to raise some funds for the best little radio station on the planet. March 26th I'll be playing at Schulers Books and Music on 28th St. Show starts at 7pm and is free and open to all ages. Thats all the news thats fit for now. Mwah!

In The Studio Feb. 5th 2010

Hey Folks! I'm headed back into the recording studio tonight. I'll be doing some guitar passes on Ramblin Man and Jen Wilson will be joining me for harmony vocals on Second Chance. Earlier this week Joe VanAcker recorded some bass tracks and Bruce Ling came by to record violin and mandolin. After our session with Nathan Kalish on Sunday all the drum parts will be done. Pete Weatherhead is coming by next week to record Pedal Steel. The record is so close to being done I can almost taste it. Thanks for all your patience. It will be worth the wait. I promise. Much love!
