The Horsepainters and the Headhunters

Headhunter's Tiki Lounge, 05/24/09

We had been asked to play this gig by good pal Dave Insley, local rake and entertainer deluxe, and were very pleased to say yes and get into a club on Red River we hadn't played yet.

Headhunter's is kitty-corner from Stubb's, placing it right in the heart of all the great entertainment to be found in the Red River district of Austin. Soundman Billy took care of us like he owed us something, making us sound great and seeing to it that we all had the proper beers and whiskeys we required.

It had been raining all day and the floor of the bar was pretty wet from the foot traffic. I was a couple weeks post knee surgery and on crutches and was therefore a bit preoccupied with making sure I didn't land on my ass before I even made it to the stage, but somehow I survived and put in what I felt was a pretty rockin' show, considering I had to sit the whole time.

We stripped it down (Carrying an amp is out when you're on sticks) and shined using drums that night, but with Phenicie on the bass and bgvs and JLB on second guitar, the thirty or so in attendance got their money's worth. I was particularly pleased with our East Coast, West Coast medly into T. Rex portion of the set, with Dave P. singing lead on "Jeepster."
