Q: Do you know to scratch?

A: Thanks for asking! I am not a hip hop turntablist so scratching is not really relevant to my craft or presentation. I've been DJing for 15 years and my roots are in house music, electro, bass, breaks, and dubstep (EDM basically). DJing this kind of music requires on-the-fly track selection, mixing/blending, and big energy on stage. If you download my live DJ mixes you might understand better: http://www.soundcloud.com/dj-rhiannon. Scratching to house music is rare and would likely mess up the vibe I worked hard to create in the room. Sometimes I scratch minimally for fun when spinning hip hop to drop in different lyrics for the sake of word-play tricks and transitions, but that's the most that is appropriate for my type of DJ presentation. If I wanted to scratch more I could certainly learn to make perfect with practice, however my time between tours is better spent writing lyrics, recording songs, producing visual content, hunting for hot music to play for my next audience, promoting, booking shows, and connecting with my fans online. I work 24/7 on all of these things and wish I had time to do more. Since scratching is not the foundation of DJing, it is arguably just a cool gimmick that some DJs choose to master to provide extra entertainment for their audiences. Since a lot of DJs scratch, I chose to develop more unique kinds of DJ gimmicks - such as writing my own songs to perform/rap live over the mic during my sets. To each their own is the bottom line I guess. Every DJ needs to discover and develop their own style. Thanks for your question. :)
