What happens when three jazz musicians come together to play catchy original pop? You dance! The Yesberger Band trio, an east coast college band founded in early 2010 is the project of lead singer and pianist Devon Yesberger, backed up by good friends Spencer Stewart on bass and Gabriel Smith on drums, is a sensible, groovy, and poetic trio mixing soul jazz nuances with catchy original pop material. Inspired by the untapped bounty of wisdom hidden amongst the stars and spread throughout our daily locale, Devon enjoys writing songs that channel the feelings of laughs and smiles that every being desires. The bands delivery only strengthens these feelings, with a positively energetic stage presence that is unmatched by most young musicians, and is evidence of a strong passion for music, as well as a deep friendship between the performers and audience.
Described as “a new voice to pay attention to,” (Linda Goldstein, Manager for Bobby McFerrin), The Yesberger Band demonstrates incredible diversity and originality that is largely due to the rich musical community they have grown out of. Devon, Gabe and Spencer were all active jazz musicians throughout high school and continue to be involved with the idiom at the Berklee College of Music, where they all currently study. However, it wasn’t until reaching Berklee that an appreciation for musical diversity became apparent. Surrounded by a plethora of songwriters, composers, and musicians from all styles in every corner of the world, they began branching out of their comfort zone in favor of forming a distinct band that combined their various musical influences while working towards big future plans.
Since then, The Yesberger Band has recorded their debut album and completed a successful summer tour that took them cross-country, opening up for acts including Bobby McFerrin, The Yellowjackets, and The Temptations. Along the way they sold over 500 CD’s in 22 dates, met hundreds of new fans, and had an incredible opportunity to share their music with the open ears of the world, an miniature foreshadow of their future goals. Even Bob Mintzer, legendary jazz saxophonist couldn’t get the songs out of his head stating, “Man, you’ve got some catchy tunes!” after headlining the show after the Yesberger Band. The debut album, The Bad Weather EP, features 6 catchy original tracks and one original cover of the popular Beatles tune, Blackbird. Cory Frye, of the Democrat Herald in Corvallis, OR says “So it’s no wonder the pianist sounds so sonically optimistic, raining soulful, gentle electric daubs across the band’s first release, “The Bad Weather” EP. Never mind the title: all seven cuts bask in sunny skies.” The CD is an independent release that features the talents of many other Berklee students making guest appearances on most tracks, as well as engineering and mixing.
