Perhaps you have heard of K 2 The Power through word of mouth?, you may support local Taranaki Music, have followed the Gypsy Fair or attended one of many Live Music festivals or craft fair events and field days in Taranaki? No matter where you've seen these lads, you are sure to remember their unique and mischievous style and pizzazz.
The musical duo, Karl Austin and Kieran Callaghan are in their own rights musicians with a passionate talent. The self described cosmic folk duo was formed early 2014 after the boyhood friends bumped into each other at one of New Plymouth's popular Open Mic Nights, K 2 The Power was born.
The multi-instrumentalists play and utilize over 7 different instruments during their performances including Piano, Guitar, Fife, Trombone, Trumpet, Kazoo, Tin Whistle and Turkish Darkuba Drums. They lovingly recreate originally inspired arrangements of the greatest songs from the 50's to the 2000's while delivering over two hours of Original music which will conjure images of zombie hordes, special muffins, personal love songs, poignant social issues, political messages, and love of good toast in the listener.
Karl and Kieran both hold a rich and diverse background to music;
Born for the stage, Karl began his music career at the age of 6, over the years belonging to the NZ Youth Brass Band, the NP Brass Band, teaching music at Waitara Highschool , Musical director at Marlaina Curtis Stage School.
The international award winner has also held the title of NZ Bass Trombone champion. In 2012 he won several gold medals at the World Performing Arts Championships in L.A., coming out on top after competing against entries from 40 different countries, walking away with 5 "Best of" plaques.
Over the years he has had the opportunity to open for name like Stan Walker, the Black Seeds, Cornerstone Roots, Six60 and has toured with NZ loop artist Mihirangi, even meeting and jamming with names like Shona Liang, Midge Marsden and Upper Hutt Posse.
Karl traveled the circuit and played at prominent NZ music festivals like Sundaise, Parihaka Peace Festival, and Takaka Hill festival to name a few.
Playing a multitude of instruments across most genres he attempts to fuse his passion of music with his sharp wit and love most things 'random'.
Kieran has spent many years pursuing his musical goals. He has studied music since the age of 5 years, pursuing his diploma in music with Trinity College London in both Piano and Singing performance while in Highschool, later attending the NZ school of music in wellington and, having a background in opera and stage musicals from a young age of 6, he was tutored by prestigious music teacher Flora Edwards and studied composition of music under mentors like Gareth Farr and John Psathas. A past member of the NZ Secondary Students Choir, he has traveled internationally with groups like this to share his love of music with listeners and is no stranger to pressure.
He likewise has a solid background in Drama with the NP Operatic society and other smaller drama groups such as the NP Little theater, holding principal roles in plays such as Bedroom Farce, Oliver, Les Miserables and The Producers.
Breaking with tradition and 'Common sense" he left the 9 to 5 rat race to become a full-time musician and dedicate his time to the art-form in early 2014. Kieran's passion for his music is always present as he controls the stage and weaves tales for the listener to loose their troubles in.
Together, when their musical prowess combines, K 2 The Power melts the mind, warms the heart, and leaves the audience in no question about where these lads are heading. Music is to be shared and they plan to hit the road and become travelling Gypsy troubadours in a house bus having been invited to provide the entertainment for the newly formed troupe "The Gypsy Extravaganza" which commences late 2015. If you haven't seen them yet, get down to an Open Mic Night before the year is out!
