LOW SOCIETY / Bio

Low Society is the brainchild of blues belter Mandy Lemons, winner of the 2015 Emissaries of Memphis Music Peoples Choice Award, and her partner in crime, guitarist and producer Sturgis Nikides, who recorded and toured with the legendary Rock & Roll Hall Of Famer, John Cale (The Velvet Underground). The pair has codified their shared love of Texas and Delta Blues, soul music and rock 'n roll into their own tasty brand of 'roots stew'. Mandy's incendiary 'take no prisoners' vocals woven together with Sturgis Nikides blistering slide guitar is unstoppable, as they blaze their way through a veritable map of the South. Big City Rhythm & Blues Magazine reviewed their debut CD 'High Time' and said "these hipsters have taken southern country blues and super-charged it to a white-hot intensity". The band has traveled extensively, playing hundreds of shows on festival, juke joint and club stages across the US and Europe. They have previously appeared at Clarksdale Mississippi's Juke Joint Festival for 4 consecutive years, the 2012 Bluesalive Festival in the Czech Republic and Poland, as well as NYC's Howl Festival for 3 consecutive years. They also participated in the prestigious International Blues Challenge in 2014 and 2015. Tracks from 'You Can't Keep A Good Woman Down' are in daily rotation on Sirius XM's Bluesville channel, along with exclusive live tracks the band recorded at Sirius XM's studio in Washington D.C. in July. The band also appeared at this years 2015 Lucerne Blues Festival in Switzerland followed by shows in Belgium and the Netherlands. Catch them in a city near you soon!

Mandy Lemons and Low Society are blazing new trails on the stomping grounds of Blues and Americana music. Texas Blues, Memphis Rock 'N Soul and a healthy dose of New York attitude help define the sound and spirit of their latest album, 'You Can't Keep A Good Woman Down', on Icehouse Records. It's a diverse collection of original songs that inject new life into, while remaining firmly rooted in, the traditional music that they live and breathe. The album has received critical acclaim from around the world, as well as numerous "Best of 2014" lists. It has placed on both the Roots Music Report Top 50 Blues Albums Chart for February as well as the Living Blues Magazine Top 25 Radio Chart for both Dec 2014 and Jan 2015. C Michael Bailey from AllAboutJazz.com said “...Lemons is a tornadic force of nature laying waste to all of the blues-rock produced since the 1960s...This band, following its mistress Lemons' lead, is a feral and untethered spirit that makes its musical statement like the basement door slamming in the dark, off its hinges”. Among the albums guest appearances are two of Memphis' best known musicians, B.B. King and Lionel Hampton alumni Dr Herman Green on the saxophone and Lucero's Rick Steff on keys and accordion. The album was produced by Sturgis Nikides, recorded at the historic Memphis landmark, American Recording Studio, and mastered by Stax legend, Larry Nix.
