Misfit Toyz is an 80's rock band playing our favorite songs from the music that inspired us to do what we do. Hard rocking, guitar driven tunes that get you moving and signing the songs you forgot all about.
In the fall of 2011 two friends and music lovers from church, Don Horvatt and Del Smith, got together for that inevitable cliché "Jam Session." As it turned out, both had formerly been in rock bands in the 80's and early 90's and shared a love of 80's guitar driven rock music. Soon drummer Steve Walden, a friend of Del's who had also been in numerous bands during this time was invited to "Jam" and the nucleus for what would eventually become Misfit Toyz was born. As Christians and musicians in churches over the years, all three currently love playing and singing praise and worship music but also missed playing the 80's guitar driven style of music they all loved and had grown up with. What started out as just "playing forfun" with no intentions of ever playing live, turned into an extensive song list and a desire to share their talents and the music they grew up listening to with others. With over 60 years of combined musical experience, Misfit Toyz promises to deliver that dose of 80's hard rock we all love. See more info about individual band members below. Don Horvatt - Guitar Don grew up in New York State and started playing guitar at the age of 10 and soon formed his first band Freedom Axe in 1978. In 1981, Don continued developing his guitar skills in Deceiver. In 1987 he joined touring band The Edge and played nearly 800 shows up and down the east coast from Clearwater, FL to Burlington, VT. In 1990 his band Destiny played the NY and PA area, as did his band Triphammer in 1992. In 1993, Don moved to FL played the central FL area in Basteel and also in 1994 with Bellvue. Today, Don lives in Northwest GA with his wife and four children. After a long break from music, Don began playing guitar again with the Peavine Baptist Church Praise Band in 2003. In 2011, what started as a onetime "Jam" evolved into Misfit Toyz where he plays lead guitar and sings backing vocals. Don attributes his playing style to Randy Rhodes, George Lynch, and Edward Van Halen. Steve Walden - DrumsSteve started playing drums at age 10 after sneaking onto a drum kit in a music store where his grandmother was paying for him to take guitar lessons. It was evident to the guitar teacher and grandma, that drums were his instrument. In High School, Steve played in various garage bands, gospel bands, as well as church. In college he played in a Christian Rock band, and while studying in Brazil was introduced to Samba and Bossa Nova styles, which he soon developed a passion for. After Brazil, Steve returned to Athens, GA, where a huge nationally recognized music scene was happening at the time. Steve played in two Athens based bands Own Little World and Cone Ponies (which later evolved into Vigilantes of Love). These were the bands that almost "made it." After getting married and leaving the music career dream behind, Steve played drums in his local Presbyterian Church Praise Band. In 1997 Steve moved to Ringgold, where he was the drummer at Oakwood Baptist Church from 2000-2010, as well as performing the occasional Coffeehouse gig with a friend or even drumming for a local theater production. Family is of utmost priority and he enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters. Steve cites his drumming influences as Peter Criss, Alex Van Halen, Roger Earl, Joey Kramer, Nicko McBrain and Terry Bozzio.Del Smith - Lead Vocals & Acoustic GuitarDel is 1 of 2 true native to the Chattanooga/Northwest GA area. Del loved to entertain his friends in high school and college with his ability to imitate the high tenor vocals from bands like Rush, Journey and The Police. While attending the University of GA in 1986, he answered an ad in the local paper on a whim for a lead vocalist in a rock band. With a dream to always be a singer and with no formal vocal or band experience, he auditioned and was selected over 12 other vocalists to become the lead singer in his first band The Jackals. As his skill level and confidence grew, he auditioned and became the lead singer in several other bands including The Bridge Club, an original alternative rock band in 1988 and Gangster an original hard rock/heavy metal band in 1989. After leaving UGA, Del moved to Atlanta where he formed the G.A.S. Band with college friend and guitarist, Mark Davis. Today Del is married and has three daughters. Since moving back to the Ringgold area in 1993, he has sung and played acoustic guitar in various churches. He was involved in the music ministry at Oakwood Baptist Church in Chickamauga for many years and sang tenor in a men's Southern Gospel Quartet for four years. Currently, he attends Peavine Baptist Church where he sings praise and worship music. Rich Harvey from Hixson,Tn. begin playin guitar Xcessively @ age 13 then had to sell rig to by diapers @ age 15.
