Meander Lane / Bio

Meander Lane started by accident...

I ran into a mate who I'd played in a few bands with & he asked if I'd like to do a one off gig for old times' sake.

I 'd pretty much decided to throw in the towel with music seeing as I'd got nowhere with it (not for want of trying).

So we got together with a few familiar faces & began rehearsing covers in a friend's diggs next to a barn in a small village in West Sussex. It was a bit cramped & less than ideal so...

Within a few weeks we relocated to Glenn's house, not 2 minutes drive from where I live. I'd not met Glenn before & he wasn't a musician but loved having us play in his lounge. After much persuasion, he agreed to try his hand at backing vocals. It worked well.

Within a few months, the lead singer had to leave as he had commitments overseas. Glenn stepped into the role of front man.

A few weeks later, we decided to record a 5 track EP to take round whatever pubs might begrudgingly entertain the idea of live music. Fortunately for the band, I happened to have quite a lot of recording gear as I'd set up a mobile studio a few years before (it was a flop).

We began writing our own material & within weeks, we'd gone off the idea of being a covers band.

So we began recording our first album - Lofts Ladders & Lounges, so named because it was all recorded in Glenn's lounge, then mixed in my loft.

The sound quality was never that great but still, we had an album.

To overcome the sound quality problem, Glenn decided to build a studio in his back garden. It was basically a huge shed.

We had immense fun raiding skips, bins & yards for any scraps of carpet/underlay we could lay our hands on - that was the soundproofing taken care of.

So we recorded an acoustic album which we released under the band name NOX - back to back with our first album Lofts Ladders & Lounges (both on iTunes etc).

Within weeks of building the studio, the band pretty much fell apart.

I Glenn & I carried on regardless.

Glenn writes the lyrics & sings, I write the music & play guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, mandolin, bouzouki, digeridoo, plus a few other instruments & take care of production/engineering.

We draft in other musicians occasionally who contribute to songwriting, like Paul who plays harmonica & Stevo who plays guitar, tuba & tenor horn, Nik on synth & backing vox, & Jack who plays drums on the odd track.

We've just taken on Simon who writes & plays guitar & is a cameraman. We've made a few videos but nothing that professional. Hopefully with Simon, that's about to change.

Between us, we work out the best arrangements for whatever we churn out.

We've been going about three years now. We don't gig so we don't have to worry about rehearsing for anything hence - crazy as it sounds - we've written about six albums worth of music in that short time.

We may gig at some point in the future but not until we've generated enough interest & there's a demand for live gigs. At that point, we'll put a full band together.

Enjoy listening.
