GI9, an idea that once sat on a couch in a few people minds is now manifesting itself faster then anyone, even those involved, thought possible. So Ron Thayer, while holding the Goya acoustic, sat firm by the words, "even if only one person likes this, I'll continue writing." Once the idea was set the project just needed a name. The name GI9, has and will always be accredited to that upset four year old in Fairfax, Virginia, who took a sharpie and ruined a brand new drum head by writing P I G in big handwriting on the surface. After she had done the deed, she added insult to the injury, lifted the head in the air for all to see, and proudly pronounced "Pig!" Off course she held it up so she could read it, and there it sat, in big bold letters, "G I 9." So with a direction and a name the band began. After a few lineup changes the band was finalized. The lineup sits four strong with Ron Thayer on vocals and guitar, Alex "Aux" Weglicki on lead guitar, Nathan Rotach on bass, and Rob Thayer on drums. Practices began and the band gained confidence for their first show. The band was given an opportunity to start off with a big name in the industry and was direct support for the band "Nelson." The band got onto the stage, hit the first chords, and after the first song the crowd knew that this wasn't a stereotypic local band. After that show the family grew, people began asking just who GI9 was. And the more people looked the more they found. The band played many other shows in the D.C. metro area, where they are located. They've done it all from headlining at the Jammin' Java to opening for bands such as The Road Ducks, Gojira, the Agonist, Threat Signal, (hed) PE, Powerman 5000, Thy Will Be Done, Mushroomhead, Carbomb, The Chariot, Sponge, and various others. Along with the touring nationals, GI9 has been honored to share the stage with numerous local bands, both at home and abroad. No matter where they play there is a level of respect gained from everyone, from the other bands, their crews, house crews, and fans. The response from people is unbelievable, in regards to the band, both on the music itself and the vibe that surrounds it. This is due to the fact that every member of the band, even the road crew, is an industry professional with a combined 30 plus years of experience doing everything from bar backing and security, to production. GI9 has seen it all and because of this they have the ability to be a self-contained unit on any given stage. The most recent performance was broadcasted live over the internet and received views from New Jersey, Alabama, Texas, California, and Florida, just to name a few states. The band has been approached with offers such as film scores, national tours, festivals, and countless support where ever they go. And without ever hearing the band, club owners know to get the bars fully stocked when GI9 is on the bill. So from the couch the band has erupted and placed the desire for more in the eyes of people across the nation, all the while retaining its fundamental roots. They play each show and practice as if it could be there last and yet maintain the energy that it is their first.
