Shaun Ritchie is a Bassist from Greenville, SC. He is a graduate of the Atlanta Institute of Music, studying under Adam Nitti, Gary Wilkins, and Alan Barnes. A graduate of the Fine Arts Center Jazz program, studying with Steve Watson.
Picking up the Electric Bass at the age of 14, Shaun formed his first band with his best friends from 7th grade in 1992. Heavily influenced by the emerging Seattle grunge scene, the young bassist poured his heart and soul into learning his instrument. Though he did not take the school approach at first. He soon became painfully aware that he needed to improve his playing ability if he were to complete his dream of being a musician on par with his heroes. So he started reading any music material he could get his hands on. Bass Player magazine found its way to the top of the reading list. During High School Shaun applied to the Fine Arts Center in Greenville, SC. where Jazz is offered to students, provided you are accepted into the program. Shaun was accepted and was privileged enough to be granted attendance for 2 years. Although the program is geared primarily toward guitarists in those early years, he was able to gain enough knowledge to be useful, sending him further down the path to musical enlightenment. After years of playing with local groups, playing this or that, and once even opening for "Dick Dale", on the heels of his "Pulp Fiction" fame. Shaun was frustrated with the music scene in his area and decided that he would be better served if he acquired more education about his passion. After reading an article in Bass Player Magazine, He applied to the Atlanta Institute of Music, and was accepted in 2001. Leaving all he knew behind, he headed off to the metropolis of Atlanta, GA. After much hard work and countless hours of woodshedding, at AIM, Shaun graduated in summer of 2002. He then was offered a place in a local group, Maxwell Lummus and toured the southeast with them until their disbanding 3 years later. Gaining valuable experience and knowledge, Shaun went on to play with many other Atlanta based bands. After 5 long years in the Atlanta music scene, Shaun decided to make the pilgrimage home to Greenville, to see if he could make his music dreams come full circle in a more familiar setting. Determined and as ambitious as ever Shaun has been playing as much as possible; trying to make a name for himself in the southeast as a worthy bassist. Spending the majority of his time composing, recording, and gigging, the fruits of his labor are here for your listening enjoyment.
Shaun's music is original in its composition, harmony, and delivery. You may see it performed in a group setting, with top level musicians accompanying him, or you may see it performed solo with a loop pedal. Either way it is a unique sound, permeated with soul, as well as technique.
