Katie Glassman Bio
Denver belle Katie Glassman leads her western swing quartet SNAPSHOT with vintage singing, champion fiddling, and an oldtime song-writing style. As a two- time national fiddle champion and the winner of the 2013 Walnut valley and Rockygrass fiddle competitions, Katie shape shifts from western swing to old time fiddle tunes with her stellar swing band. Her contemporary compositions showcase her deep roots in Texas-style western swing.
The reviews for her 2012 album, “SNAPSHOT,” (Fiddle Parlor Publishing) were outstanding:
“One of the most exciting singers, musicians, and composers in the country, Katie posses the uncommon ability to blend tradition with contemporary color.” (Joey McKenzie, QUEBE SISTERS BAND).
"A mix of highly danceable western swing with a splash of jump swing, blues and more than a sultry moment or two fueled by Glassman’s breathy vocals and steamy solos.” (Strings Magazine)
“I always find myself in awe when someone with the talent, and the right feel for swing, country, and gypsy jazz presents itself in the manner of Katie Glassman. There is not an instant that is not an example of superb musicianship within the entire cast of players on Katie Glassman's record ‘Snapshot.’” Tom Hagerman (Devotchka)
Katie’s fiddling love affair began at age 9. Inspired by old-time Texas music, she began playing by ear, winning numerous honors throughout the West. In 1998, she captured the National Junior Fiddle Championship in Weiser, Idaho, and two years later the National Young Adult Fiddle Championship. She is a three- time top five finalist in the National Grand Champion Division and in 2011, she won the National Western Stock Show Championship. She was a judge for the National Oldtime Fiddle Competition in 2001 and 2010.
In 1994, Katie opened the Fiddle Parlor Teaching Studio in Denver, where she instructs students of all ages in the intricate and diverse aural fiddling tradition. Katie spends many weeks every year teaching at various fiddle camps across the country, including the Montana fiddle camp, Hartz fiddle camp, Texas Oldtime Fiddlers camp, Ludiker Fiddle camp, A Midsummer Days Dream String camp, and many more.
Katie studied jazz and classical violin at the University of Colorado under jazz pianist Chip Stephens and violinist Jennifer John. She played in the top CU jazz combo, was awarded the Outstanding Performer Award at the Abilene Jazz Festival, and was first runner-up for the IAJE International Sisters of Jazz competition. In 2004, she graduated with a degree in music performance and the first certificate in jazz studies awarded to a violinist.
In 2007, Katie added to her educational lineage by studying with the protégé of Gypsy jazz violinist Stephane Grapelli. She became only the second American student to attend the Centre Musique Didier Lockwood in France, where she earned a Certificate “Avec Mention Bien” after a year of study with Didier Lockwood.
In 2012, Katie began the Fiddle Parlor Publishing Company for all of her original compositions and upcoming educational publications. In 2013, Katie launched the Fiddle Parlor Record Label. “Dream A Little Dream” will be the first album released on the label.
