Phil Greer – Singer Songwriter Bio:
Phil Greer is a musician in a town with more per capita musicians than perhaps anywhere else in the world. He moved to Austin in 1993 from upstate New York and never looked back - musically-speaking that is.. While he'd like to think his songs are good, the bar is set pretty damn high in this town and in Texas. He’s found a new set of musical heroes old and young, here and gone – Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, James McMurtry, The Flatlanders (together and solo), Charlie Sexton, Radney Foster, Darden Smith, The Resentments (with Stephen Bruton), Alejandro Escovedo, and so many more…
“In my early years, I had the benefit of hearing all these new songs hit the radio air waves by the likes of The Byrds, the Beatles, and then a little later, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Van Morrison, Carole King, CSN&Y, Poco, Loggins & Messina - the list could go on and on. It was a prolific time for experimentation across all kinds of music, and I tried to soak it all up.”
“I achieved a couple of significant milestones in my college days, winning top prize at a state conclave of fraternity chapters which included performing my own composition. Performing for 1,500 people and their acceptance of my song was inspiring. I also composed a love song setting words from the living bible based in 1st Corinthians. I was asked to play that song many times over the years at weddings and funerals and was gratified I could help whether it was a celebration or a reflective, solemn occasion.
Flash forward to 2014. Phil's song "In Your Arms Tonight" won the Publishers Pick of the Day", having been selected by 30+ year Nashville music publisher Chris Oglesby, at the Austin Songwriter Group annual Symposium. Chris introduced the song and Phil performed it Friday night, January 10, 2014. Chris had a tear when Phil played this song with its direct, simple soaring chorus and said this was the reason he chose it... Phil is still enjoying the memory, knowing what a great honor it was to be selected!
In January 2015, Phil's song "The Night We Met" made the finals in the anuual Austin Songwriters Group song writing contest in the Jazz/Blues category. "With so many great song and writers, just to be in the running is something I'm very proud of".
Phil has been writing songs for many years, but really focused more on a business career. About ten years ago, he decided that in this very short life we’re given, that the time had come to focus more on what he truly loves doing - songwriting. He’s a sucker for melody and a soaring chorus to express an emotion. What will you hear when he plays and sings? You'll hear a distinctive style that may faintly echo some of those many musical influences, but in a unique style that is all his own.
Phil likes to write songs and hang out with good friends. Check out the songs. Drop him a line and let him know what you think.
