I grew up outside of Philadelphia, PA having an early interest in music. I began piano lessons at age 7, but later made the saxophone my primary instrument. I sang in choral ensembles in elementary and high school, and occasionally sang in the youth choir of Salem Baptist Church in Jenkintown PA.
I attended Boston's Berklee College of Music in the mid-1970's as a Music Composition major, and Boston became my home for many years. I performed with Funk/R&B and Jazz bands throughout New England and eastern Canada, One band, DOWNTIME, opened for such music acts as James Brown, Roger Trautman/Zapp, Average White Band, Tower of Power and War. DOWNTIME released a 45 rpm record and was featured on another 45 rpm release by COJO. DOWNTIME also video-taped a 30 minute studio session which aired on the BET network. I arranged instrumental music scores for Boston-area radio jingles, a laser-light show and a gospel album while employed at Midgaard Studios, owned by Roberto Mighty. I performed in studio recordings, including sessions with a Ghanaian composer/pianist and Haitian Kompa musicians.
I returned to the Philadelphia area in 1990 and performed in several Jazz and R&B bands, and did music-related office and technical work at Kloss Studios, Keswick Theatre and 3 branches of Settlement Music School. In 1999, I portrayed musical and acting roles in "The Buddy Holly Story" at Philadelphia's Walnut Street Theatre, and I continue to perform in that show in venues across the U.S. I was a Showband woodwindist for Carnival Cruise Lines from 2000-2011, sailing in the Bahamas, Caribbean, Central America, Hawaii and Alaska, and from 2007 held the position of Musical Director. I also arranged live band scores and synthesized music projects for ship entertainers.
I use the pseudonym of IMHOTEP2 for my own compositions. My instrumental "Remember Giza" is on internet radio at the following website:
