magpie....is about blue notes swingin’ and jazzin’. A passionate chanteuse backed by a cool hot band.
The core of Geoff Macdonald (guitar) and Doug van Hemessen (double bass) combines years of experience from rock, country, folk, blues, and jazz. Dueting over a couple of years with aspiring singers coming and going set a foundation of tunes culled from a span of many decades. With the discovery of Natalie Brown in 2010, Magpie lifted off with a gifted vocalist. Drums filled out the sound and with the added magic of wind instruments Magpie recorded demos and hit the stages at Peterborough clubs and an appearance at the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival.
With 2011 upon us Matt Greco tastefully works the skins .... while Sandy Taylor adds the nuanced texture of the Tenor and Alto sax ...breathing in and out of the sonic garden.
Becoming a fixture on the Peterborough music scene Magpie entertains with a repertoire that includes classic jazz standards, contemporary blues, jazzified country ballads, melody, harmony, and rhythm with tempos from a heartbeat at rest to gassin’ it down Route 66.
These 'Boots' weren’t made just for walkin’... we 'Moondance' through 'Summertime' for '“Semi-mental” Reasons'. 'A New Coat of Paint' might thaw those 'Popsicle Toes' but 'Temptation' won’t 'Stop This World'...yet 'The Beat Goes On'.............
