Darren began singing and playing guitar in High School inspired by his older brother Flip who also plays guitar. Interested in a variety of artists such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Jimi Hendrix, Peter Gabriel, Black Sabbath and C,S,N&Y, Darren played local parties and bars in Granite City, a small steel town on the Illinois side of St. Louis. While attending college at S.I.U.E where he received Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Oil Painting and Conceptual Art, Darren began playing more seriously in a band called “Jinx.” He also began writing at this time. “Jinx” played the bar circuit playing mostly covers and they were seen several times on the pre-MTV local cable show called “Streetbeat.” He produced their first recordings and storyboarded a music video for the band. They began renting halls for their shows since the local bar scene was not interested in original acts. After graduating Darren re-located to L.A. where he eventually formed a new group, “Ring of Fire.” They played in L.A. for about 2 years and then recorded a CD. “Ring of Fire” had a very progressive sound with influences ranging from Pink Floyd and Steely Dan to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Frank Zappa. (There is a DVD of one show just prior to their break-up which may become available soon.) With a short hiatus Darren re-surfaced playing blues and early rock with local bands. Meanwhile, he was gathering the material for his first solo album. This CD was written, produced and engineered by Darren and is now available. Titled Darren McGovern (AKA Candle.)
In 2010 Darren then began working with producer Mike Castonguay and released the album titled THIS OLD LIFE. The song High Horse was used on NBC's Friday Night Lights and the song This Old Life was featured in the feature film Zombie Hamlet.
2011 brought the new album CELEBRATE THE LIGHT which released October 23rd 2011. It features Mark Goldenberg (guitarist for Jackson Browne,) Mike Castonguay producer and bass player, plus Simon Hancock on drums and percussion.
