joey english / Bio

Joey English (born December 27, 1982) is an American singer-songwriter from Irvine, CA. English picked up the guitar at 13 and began writing songs through his teenage years. His first EP, Sycamore, was recorded in 2005 and was released years later online. In 2009 English released a self-titled album, which he recorded himself in the basement of an old house in Knoxville, TN. English self-recorded his latest album Plastic Horse, which is set to be released in spring 2014.
He continues to write his own brand of folk, inspired by the balladeers and songsters of the past. He has won multiple singer-songwriter competitions in Knoxville, TN and has opened for bands such as Delta Spirit and Cold War Kids. He currently resides in Knoxville, TN.

Joey English grew up in the groomed suburbs of Irvine, Calif. As a youth he loved to swim, build forts, flatten coins on railroad tracks, climb trees, and play basketball for his dad's team. He made the All Star "B" team for NJB (National Junior Basketball). He won championships at the Boy's and Girl's Club, which made his father proud.

Saying goodbye to youth was difficult for Joey. He became an old man at 13. New people and new hormones drove Joey inward. Around this time Joey's parents gave him a Washburn acoustic guitar for Christmas. Joey studied guitar under the VHS tape "Learn Guitar With Larry Little." After school he practiced for hours, rarely leaving the bedroom. This is where his music began. This is when he quit the basketball team.

Joey has since graduated from both high school and college, with a degree in Communications/Print Journalism. After graduating college a friend offered him a social work position in Knoxville, TN. Joey had never heard of Knoxville but didn't think twice and took off in his '92 Chrysler Concord. He had enough of the OC suburban paradise. He was done drinking Old English in a parking lot behind John Wayne Airport. The developed walkways and double-wide freeways finally drove him out. At 25 he needed to jump; break loose; be anonymous; make mistakes; die a little; cry a little; come alive a little.

Joey promised his family and friends he'd return in a year. He has still not returned. Joey considers himself a late-bloomer. At around 30 he realized that "figuring it out" is like reaching for the wind. And that "let it be" is best for him. The rest will follow.

Joey continues to write songs and perform in Knoxville. Over the years his musical endeavors have mostly been overshadowed by his freedom chains. But alas, victory is on the horizon. Joey has never been more grateful or happy to be alive and feels that he is exactly where he's supposed to be.
