The Boxing Lesson / Bio

The Boxing Lesson is a rock band from Austin, TX. A power trio with synthesizers performing the bass player's role, they create a mammoth psychedelic 'wall of sound' that begins minimally and builds into grand orchestrations. Vocalist and guitarist Paul Waclawsky, synthesizer player Jaylinn Davidson and ex-Supersuckers smasher Dancing Eagle combine strong songwriting with desert rock, guitar freak-outs, soul space jams and plenty of Texas rock ’n’ roll thunder.

Big Hits! is the first full-length album released by The Boxing Lesson in five years. It is not a concept album nor does it have political overtones, although it may offer solutions to some personal troubles. It’s more rock-oriented than The Boxing Lesson’s past albums. It is produced by Chris “Frenchie” Smith at The Bubble in Austin, TX, and contains a total of 11 songs. Big Hits! is not a jam-band album. Most tracks are under 4 minutes in length. There are lengthy guitar solos for cosmic relevance, but only in 3 songs. Synthesizers were used extensively but it’s neither new-age nor electronica music. Big Hits! is definitely psychedelic but not in a throw-back 60′s way. It’s recommended to listen to the songs in order, but if shuffled there will be no negative consequences. Multiple listens produce higher levels of understanding.

The Boxing Lesson traces its roots to L.A., where the group formed around frontman Paul Waclawsky in 2002. Despite lineup changes, drug arrests, and a move to Austin, the group has remained largely consistent, with each release offering up a new slab of psych to digest. Last summer’s Muerta EP might be the trio’s best effort yet, relying more on the spaciness of Pink Floyd and a range of synthesizers, but there’s no denying the inherent power of the power trio. “Health Is The New Drug” has already been hailed by Houston Press as the best song of the year, despite only being released in February.
