CZAR / Bio

CZAR was forged on the rough and tumble streets of Tacoma, WA early in ‘07 by bassist Peter Joseph Ruff and drummer David Joseph Dorran Jr. Formerly known as Osama Bin Rockin, they joined forces with guitarist Nicholas J. McManus, vocalist Dr. Landon Jared Wonser, and keyboardist Evan Lundberg in the years and months leading up to the summer of 2011.

As Osama Bin Rockin, the boys made a frantic mess of stage performances around Washington in the short number of years following the band’s incarnation. Their style: take the elegance of progressive music and poetry and combine it with the raw noise of metal, grindcore, and punk. Writing and discarding songs, constantly shaping their craft, they slowly caught a small but steady crowd of music nerds and weirdoes that could appreciate their over exaggerated ideas.

Ultimately as a band unknown for its obnoxiousness in performance, name, and recordings, there was a ceiling to their growth. Soon the decision became clear. After months of grueling song construction, sore bodies, and deliberation, the band decided to carve new musical territory by recording their first studio album. Guided by the advice of local artists, Hunab Ku and Barefoot Barnacle, they set forth for Houdini’s Tree Studios in June of 2011.

Upon Arrival they were scared, small, and broke. Day 1 came with the death of the all too close to home, Bin Laden. The resulting confusion, along with the maturity of a sobering work ethic, brought a shift in mindset. More months went by without a moments rest. Slowly growing in the local music scene, and in their hearts, they began to see the distant horizon with hope, and as Fall crept in, the last days of recording finalized. The album was completed, and a new band was born: CZAR!

Old Haunts, CZAR’s debut album, is the culmination of years of creative juggling. The influences of CZAR span decades, genres, lifestyles and ideas. With as much diversity in the band’s members as its songs, it would only be expected that such a hodgepodge of abrasive musical textures would come together to create this album. What else could a group composed of drug users, vegetarians, married men, and a doctor create?

Old Haunts is available online or at any CZAR show! Along with the CD, a line of DIY merch is also widely available. CZAR’s devotion to their individuality is their greatest asset. They take great care in creating, or at least having a hand in creating, everything they’ve distributed down to their hand screened t-shirts, hand pressed buttons, and hand cut stickers. This is only possible through the support of friends, local artists, and fans. With the help of you, the growth of CZAR is inevitable!

When seeing CZAR live audiences typically don’t expect whatever it is that CZAR has to offer. Whether performing in sweater vests and Velcro shoes or a latex jumpsuit, the show will be notable. In fact first time viewers rarely can fully comprehend the depth of the actual music interwoven within the performance; it’s usually overshadowed by 5 grown men flailing around like children. That being said, entertainment and inquisition always follows for those that catch the spark of what CZAR represents. With the second glance of the recorded album only comes further appreciation. The band has coined itself as progressive grindcore in light of this.

The future of CZAR is only limited by its members’ creativity. 2012 won’t be wasted. Future plans include the release of the single, “Surrounded by Hooves” sometime this winter as well as a follow up EP shortly after. The year will undoubtedly include new merch and various shows around the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
