A Nickel Bag of Funk / Press

“A Nickel Bag of Funk always get the party going, so come ready to dance. Isaac Smith blends folk-tinged originals with a surprising array of upbeat pop covers (the fella can wail on some Katy Perry, y’all).”

““I’m bringing my massive collection of music and videos. The fantastic funk band A Nickel Bag of Funk is performing and there will be themed drinks, a photo booth, look-alikes, trivia and more,” he said. “Wearing purple will get you some nice surprises as well.””

“Nickel Bag of Funk is a collective out of Savannah on the verge of taking their sound to the next level. Now in the process of interviewing booking agents and managers, the band is trying to expand their touring repertoire on a global scale. They’ve performed in Statesboro enough times to become a local staple. If there is one thing that is definite about the band, it is their energy in live performances. Leslie Adele owns the stage during her shows. She has a powerful voice alone, but she also takes a fearless approach, actively encouraging the audience to get involved. The jams pull you out of your seat and the lead makes sure you are having a good time. The band is also working hard and working nonstop. In only eight months they have eclipsed their 260 shows from 2013. This past weekend, they were playing their 270th show at World of Beer in Jacksonville. They are on the road promoting their current album, Melodic Schizophrenic.”

“Best Local Soul/Funk/R&B Group/Artist A Nickel Bag of Funk Last November’s release of the long-gestating Melodic Schizophrenic showed the doubters that Nickel Bag, which has taken this award for six consecutive years, is one of Savannah’s coolest bands in any category. Songwriter and lead vocalist Leslie Adele, ably aided and abetted by Willie Jones, Jermaine Baker and Tre Moore, knows how to create the groove, lock it and ride it. Amar Wilkins recently joined the Bag on keyboards.”

“I went up to the mountains, I went down to the seas/And I ain't found nothing better than what I brought with me/I got a nickel, I got a nickel bag of funk! Do you want it? With this pronouncement, sung in an octave-leaping Stevie Wonder voice over percolating bass, drums and be-bopping baritone sax, Leslie Adele throws her business card on the table. Adele's song, and her band, are both called A Nickel Bag of Funk. And the long-gestating debut album, unveiled this week, is titled Melodic Schizophrenic.”

“GATA’s Sports Bar & Grill will have not a penny, not a dime, but A Nickel Bag of Funk performing on its stage this Friday at 9:00 p.m.”

“After storming this category for almost half a dozen years, vocalist Leslie Adele and her sweet 'n' funky cohorts Jermaine Baker and Anthony Jones have finally made their debut recording. Redux: Melodic Schizophrenic comes out in late summer.”

“Leslie Adele, lead singer for Nickel Bag of Funk, gets the students and the audience pumped as she performs during a celebration of Black History Tuesday night at Shuman Elementary School.”

“ “PUT YOUR 5S UP!”: Leslie Adele NEIGHBORHOOD: Georgetown IDEA: Recording A Nickel Bag of Funk’s first full-length studio album WHY HERE? “Savannah will always be home.” ONE THING THAT SHOULDN'T BE CROWD-SOURCED: “Religion.””

“World of Beer, located on Broughton Street, was infused with funky mixes of R&B, hip-hop, rock and soul Oct. 13, by native Savannah band A Nickel Bag of Funk. The band has performed over 300 times in the past year, been spotlighted in The Savannah Morning News, South and Savannah Magazines and has been consistently voted Best R&B/Funk Band in Connect Savannah’s annual “Best of Savannah” feature. Anyone downtown could hear the echo of A Nickel Bag of Funk, evident by the steadily growing crowd throughout the three-hour performance. Every seat was occupied, even the entrance and pathway to the space.”

“Vocalist Leslie Adele's soulful and silky powerhouse has been voted Savannah's Best R&B/Funk Band for four consecutive years in the Connect reader's poll. "When I was coming up I was embarrassed about my voice," she told us. "I don't have a typical female voice - it's not light or wispy, it's strong, deep and very powerful. I always thought it made me strange that I had this booming singing voice. I'm a true tenor. And in some spots I can very cleanly sing baritone. As I got older, I started listening to Chaka Khan, Mahalia Jackson, Etta James, Gladys Knight, Toni Braxton - all these women that had strong, booming voices. They weren't wispy like Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey." Track: "Shake That Leg."”

“The concert featured Nickel Bag of Funk, which performed hits from Michael Jackson and Montel Jordan. Lead singer of the Nickel Bag of Funk, Leslie Adele performs with so much soul and energy that the whole circle was dancing throughout the whole concert, happy and full with excitement.”

“Five Best Of wins in six years — there’s your stamp of love and approval for vocalist Leslie Adele’s skillful and hardworking outfit.”

“The supporters traveled from the nearby areas of Bluffton and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; Atlanta and Brunswick, Georgia; and from as far away as Florida, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Missouri to attend the fundraiser. They enjoyed a mix of activities, including listening to the musical sounds of Legendary Bass player Ben Tucker and his band; dancing to live music presented by Nickel Bag of Funk; hot food and casino style entertainment in the ballroom of the University’s new Student Union.”
