Marika Hughes and I will be playing excerpts from Volumes I & II of my Hits or Misses for Violin and Cello. The Hits or Misses are a collection of duos written with Bartok's violin duos in mind: short vignettes for two instruments. Volume II is dubbed the "Free Series" and it is written to honor victims of police brutality and racism in America. It came out of Mazz’s desire to pay homage to the victims of police brutality and racism. To honor the dead and battered by reminding our society that we have work to do and to inspire the dialogue necessary for that work to continue and flourish. The music itself is a tribute that she hopes will serve as a catalyst for social awakening and change. She considers that social change to be the greatest of all tributes.
Electronic Meditations on Freedom, Justice and Compassion. Also, We Make Noise - The [MazzMuse] Breakdown explores and expounds on the musical explorations of Mazz's early days, spent musing in the woodshed with her electric violin, experimental vocals and looper. Added to that roux are BLVK SamuRai's expertise as beatmaker/producer; James Shipp's extraordinary harmonic and sweetly musical mind, expressed through several instruments; and tersely pointed lyrics - these three artists come together to break it down for you with their Modern Day Protest Songs.
Mazz Swift and Alisa Rose, two classically trained violinists turned genre defying fiddlers, will present a program of innovative and expressive music. It will be a program of solos and duos of their creation plus a few snippets of classical repertoire. Mazz and Alisa’s original tunes are influenced from their backgrounds in classical music, energetic Irish fiddle tunes, spiraling gypsy dances, fiery tangos, free improvisation, and rowdy bluegrass tunes. Both violinists travelled with separate groups as cultural ambassadors of the United States State Department. Mazz singing and playing with the Brazilian Bluegrass group Matuto to Mozambique, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Cameroon and Senegal; and Alisa singing and playing with the Real Vocal String Quartet to Azerbaijan, Macedonia, Bosnia, Latvia and Lithuania.
From group improvisations to contemporary arrangements of standards, SOLO: Her is an intimate evening of music celebrating the individual voice of three women. Marika Hughes, Fay Victor and Mazz Swift bring together their varying musical styles and influences that extend across jazz, soul, folk, rock, and beyond.
