Artist Statement:
The Spirit of an artist culture is what hails in all people. Culture when it is taken away or under severe oppression can transfer and then transform into creative expression. The spirit allows a people to go deep into one's genetic memory in the sub-conscious streams, on a level, musical science have yet to quantify or explain. Cultural sounds, rituals and celebration can travel great distances in unfamiliar places. Sounds, even if it's a humming can spark mass memories and in turn ignite a fire for meaning even in darkness. Many times hidden and intergrated in new cultural art forms.
I enjoy playing with other creative spirits that use sound to sculpture music or positive vibrations. More importantly I always enjoyed listening and learning from others, even if it is something I'm familiar with. Perspective, perception, physics and environment can make even a familiar sound different.
It is a pleasure to create music in a way that is free of ism's.
It is even become more of a pleasure in studying, designing, creating and making instruments (Udongo's, Udu's, Cerama-saxes, Akontings, gourd banjos and African Flutes) with my hands from the earth or wood, many of which I play on the above songs. And inturn, I hope I can be a vehicle, a stewart of the earth and a becon for positive social change for the next generation.....Charles "Wsir" Johnson, "I try to be music not just play it"
