Since forming in 2003, the John Henrys have become one of Ottawa's most recognized and accomplished bands. Their self-titled debut album, released in 2004, reached number one on Ottawa's main campus radio station (CKCU) and received regular rotation on CBC radio. Along with a compelling debut album and on the strength of their live shows, the John Henrys were invited to play some of Canada's top music festivals (Canadian Music Week, North by North East) and even played a live, three song set on CBC's nationally broadcasted Definitely Not The Opera. They also began to share the stage with some of Canada's most recognized live acts ( The Sadies, Cuff the Duke, The Golden Dogs, Elliot Brood, Femme-bots ) .
In 2006, The John Henrys released their sophomore effort ‘Sweet as the Grain'. Recorded and produced by the John Henrys at their rehearsal-turn-studio space, ‘Sweet as the Grain' found the John Henrys at their most comfortable and confident. “(A) rootsy masterpiece...'Sweet as the Grain' is a glorious romp through country lanes with the occasional detour into the garage” (Alan Wigney, Ottawa Sun). “This is great country-roots rock played with (sic) performed with conviction and soul, the way Canada should be represented... A truly magnificent release” (Dave Aardvark, birdman sound). The album immediately hit number one on the campus charts and enjoyed a four week stay. ‘Lost in the Canyons', the fifth song on the album, received attention from one of Ottawa's more popular commercial radio station, 106.9 The Bear, and began to receive regular rotation. The John Henrys were founded by Rey Sabatin in 2002 but it took a while for his vision to gel.
After a year and several roster changes later (including a stint with singer/songwriter Kate Maki), The John Henrys finally found its' face in 2004 with the inclusion of Doug Gouthro on guitar and Darryl Quinlan on bass. This lineup, which also includes Geoff Ward on drums and Steve Tatone, the multi-instrumentalist, have made The John Henrys a fiery five-piece ensemble whose sound can go from the bitter-sweet to the sandpaper-raw.
