Half of the songs on Soul Clap are originals (the other half are covers of obscure gems from the Northern Soul era) with a choreographed stage show to match. the beauty of covering obscure soul songs from the past mixed with originals is that it is difficult to tell which is which. The originals are that good. The songs weave the horn section through each arrangement giving each song the layered and organic approach that defies most of today's soul music both by inspiration and passion. Although the original songs could have been written in the late 50's and early 60's in Memphis or Detroit, they don't ring nostalgic or derivative. It's not the listener who is being transported to another place and time, but the best music of a near-forgotten era being brought to our modern time; We are much in need of real music like this.”

With 11 members wielding drums, bass, guitars, a full horn section, and three strong female vocalists, the Inciters have no problem filling a room with the sound of soul. At a recent evening practice session at Santa Cruz Rehearsal Studios, the band members and their instruments crowded a little gray room with Persian style carpets and chest-high amps. “There’s nothing like a little volcano ash to make a band bust a move. That’s what happened to Santa Cruz 11-piece soul ensemble The Inciters, when it got stuck in Germany because its plane was grounded due to a headline-making volcanic eruption in Iceland. The band thought it had finished its European tour, but with debris looming overhead and dues to pay for last-minute room and board in Hamburg, it was show time. “We had to hustle,” trumpeter Rick Kendrick begins, “we were all broke, running out of money at the end of a tour, and having to pay for all of us to stay at a hostel.” Kendrick laughs, “Luckily for us there were also clubs needing bands, so we were able to gig to play for our supper.” Ultimately, the group strutted its stuff, with one club holding a “benefit to get American band home.” Signed to a German label, performing to packed European crowds, swaying through the singles “Soul Clap” and, “The Hamburg Hustle,” they are finally returning to Sa”
