““Music is like an open air canvas,” Ragland said. “It’s like a painting but there is a point of view you want people to hear instead of see. When I perform I want people to hear what sounds like a great record.” Ragland said after producing so many other artists he learned music should be less about volume and more about balance. When Ragland plays live, the audience dictates the feel of the music, but Ragland also takes the venue’s acoustics and the size of the crowd into account when figuring out the logistics of sound. As the crowd thickens Ragland increases his volume to be sure the folks on the other side of the venue get the same quality sound that people five feet from the piano are getting. Ragland said about 90 percent of his show is original music. The occasional cover will emerge throughout the night, but Ragland said it is only to keep the crowd “grounded.””
