Q: Listening to the lovely Mountains and Valleys now. A great song. Did the poetic lyrics occur to you first, or was the tune constructed starting with the guitar riff?
A: Thank-you! Your question reminds me of a great Sonic Youth song called 'Or' that you should check out. Having played electric guitar from a young age, I always appreciate a good guitar hook. Writing songs, I tend to start with melodies, sometimes arriving at snippets of lyrics or some kind of vocal harmony at the same time. Then I go back and tinker with lyrics. I often continue tinkering beyond the initial recording(s) of a song. This was the case with the acoustic version of Mountains and Valleys. I'd previously recorded an electric multi-track variant with different guitar-work (some if it represented in recent loop versions). I wrote and recorded this acoustic version the day after I rearranged the lyrics and recorded what would become The Move-Along. To balance out the melancholy chord progressions prevalent a lot of my other acoustic tracks (ex: the Move-Along), I worked out some short finger-strokes and a different way of singing Mountains and Valleys that both fit the overall vibe and livened up the mix. The alternating finger/thumb picking throughout the verses (where I simultaneously play the bass line + acoustic rhythm) was a new thing for me (not being an acoustic gtr. player first), so I had to train my brain and fingers to work together coordinating this single guitar pattern which I'd previously separated into different tracks for the electric variant. Then I tried singing it at the same time..! It took me a couple tries to get it recorded. Where my imagination works ahead of my finger/muscle-memory abilities, I translate colorful thoughts into tangible guitar parts by trial and error. Hemispheres is a product of that process of translation (where no previous electric version existed). The lyrics of M & V represent some of the things I was feeling at that stage of my life, in grad school, reading a lot of intense philosophy, losing my eyesight (world closing in around me), feeling a bit alienated from people's everyday concerns and not quite sure how
