THE BELLFURIES - BIO
The Bellfuries are one of the best-loved bands in Austin, Texas, and one of the most popular groups with roots music fans world-wide.
The band formed in 1998, featuring Joey Simeone (vocals/guitar) and Josh Williams (upright bass). Early Bellfuries gigs often verged on anarchy.
It was a young band, with talent and discounted drink in surplus. However, the release of "Just Plain Lonesome" (2001) marked the arrival of an original and musically matured group. A handful of cover songs--learned from Webb Pierce, Dion, and Sam Cooke--were obvious nods to where the band had come from.
What was most intriguing, though, was where they were going. Joey's original songs were the itinerary, nuanced, but in no way limited, by music past. Now augmented by guitarist Mike Molnar, The Bellfuries toured extensively
to promote "Lonesome."
The band's night-to-night existence would eventually resemble something like a pack of werewolves. A change was inevitable, and Joey relocated to California,to begin work on the songs that would make up "Palmyra" (2006).
The Bellfuries had by now recruited LA legend Bobby Trimble (Big Sandy) on drums, and Shecky Seaver on bass. There was a change of musical scenery as well;
"Palmyra"is largely an electric pop record, as compared with the essentially acoustic "Lonesome." Of course, just as "Lonesome" trod a fresh path from where Pierce and Cooke left off, so did "Palmyra." (It just happened that
The Beatles and REM showed up along the way.)
After comparatively relaxed promotion for "Palmyra," the band learned that "Lonesome," which had gone out of print, was being bootlegged in the UK. Timing is indeed everything--their UK return was a sold-out appearance
at the 2010 Rockabilly Rave (marking the legitimate reissue of "Just Plain
Lonesome" with bonus tracks).
Though once again based in Austin, Texas, The Bellfuries haven't had much leisure time there.
"This is what I do," Joey says, backstage, after a memorable night at the HMV Institute in Birmingham. "I want
to sing, I want to get out there and play. We're gonna have a good time." He adjusts his cap, and grins."We're gonna have a good time
