July 2012 saw the premiere of MR. OWL's BROKEBEAT, a party for showcasing the best experimental producers of hip-hop and electronic music bubbling up from the underground, local and national alike. Rising stars in futuristic hip-hop beatmaking from Queens, Columbus, Rochester and Pittsburgh converged to make Vol.1 – and its til-5am rager afterparty – a memorable night to say the least.
BROKEBEAT is back for round 2 on Friday Sept. 28th at 6119, this time bringing the focus back home to Pittsburgh to shine light on the hardest grinding visionaries in the local underground: FORTIFIED PHONETX, KINGPIN, OYO aka BLAKLUNG, DIVINE SEVEN, DJ NOETIK 5000 & SPAED. These performers were handpicked as much for their cross-genre aesthetics as their raw talent.
Each producer is hauling unique studio gear onstage to perform their original music in its natural habitat, while video artist CASEY HALLAS’ visual scheme includes overhead live camera feeds so the audience can watch see exactly what the artists' hands are doing. Of course he will also be bringing his signature style of live video remixing to the HD projectors.
FORTIFIED PHONETX is a versatile crew who can all craft beats as easily as they can rock mics. Each member will throw down a short set of their own production, capped off by a headline act of all three forming together. In celebration of the release of his brand new album "High Art", heavyweight future-bap surgeon SPAED will host the festivities then close out the night by delivering the album in its entirety as part of his 2-3am late set.
