“Friday: If you’re one of the AB&E early birds, look for female-fronted rock and soul group Shotgun Soul (3:30 p.m., Budweiser Rock Stage).”
“An 8-piece band including a horn section, hip-hop artist and vocals by Liz Girard, Shotgun Soul is bringing funky soul music back to Detroit.”
“This band’s kinda all over the radio dial: There’s “soul,” yes, but also some pop-rock flair, and even a bit of reggae. Wavy grooves, head-banging beats and whipping hooks, garnished with just a hint of feedback and heavy pours of attitude.”
“With all this talk about gun laws and gun regulations, many conservative thinkers see the future of the second amendment in question. But for the eclectic metro Detroit band Shotgun Soul, halting their trigger is not an option. The five-piece group blends rock, punk, ska, Motown and a bit of hip hop to create some head-knocking, dance-worthy, good-time music. Led by their fiery singer Lizzy Boomsticks, Shotgun Soul has played at more than 25 different venues throughout Michigan and will rock their smoked-out fans at the Tap Detroit 420 Experience show at PJ’s Lager House this Saturday. So if you plan to get down on Saturday, leave your politics at home and look forward to a night with the big guns.”
“High-energy Detroit-soul rockers Shotgun Soul were winners of the festival's Facebook contest. "When we signed up for the contest, we didn't even expect to make it to the finals," says Shotgun Soul vocalist Liz Girard. "So to win is a dream come true, and we are very grateful to the Monroe Street Fair for this wonderful opportunity." ”
“Although not from Ann Arbor, this year’s acts promise to keep the joint jumping after the morning’s pro-pot speechmaking is over. Shotgun Soul blends rock, funk, soul, Motown, pop, reggae, hip-hop, blues and jazz. According to a post on its Web site, “Shotgun Soul is always looking to mix the old with the new, taking it to the next level.” ”
"Shotgun Soul mixes it up with influences that include Motowns early years, the wailing pipes of Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant and the ska/punk vibe of Sublime"
"Back in the day", before the lion's share of music became mindless cookie-cutter digitized pop, bands created and captured sounds whose heart 'n soul could practically be tasted. Happily, a few examples of "diggin' down deep" tunes still exist today. Witness Shotgun Soul. Rich, textured vocals, strong arrangements and highly adept musicianship make this self-titled debut a dynamic sampling of a band just on the brink of a breakthough. Not having yet seen them on stage, the four tracks hereon hint at tons of potential in a live setting. Is it mere coincidence that this quartet hail from in and around Detroit, that quintessential hot-bed of ROCK? Well, who can say?
