Bio
2009 marks the 45th year as a professional musician for RON CAMPBELL. Starting in bar bands at age 14, he has played rock & roll, country, jazz, blues, classical and R&B. He’s been a cocktail lounge pianist, and a snare drummer in a marching band. He’s accompanied strippers, comedians, and jugglers, as well as church soloists and jazz vocalists. There is scarcely a musical experience that Ron has not had in his long career.
Ron started as a drummer, but soon added keyboards, bass, guitar, harmonica and saxophone to his list of instruments. As bandleader or sideman, he’s played with hundreds of great musicians, including such well-known names as Gerry Barnum, Steve Briggs, Armando Castagnoli, Gary Fjellgaard, Roy Forbes, Tim Hearsey, Sam Hurrie, Ron Irving, Jack Lavin, Louise Rose, Pat Steward, and David Woodward.
In 1997, Ron began working primarily as a solo artist. He developed a deep interest in Delta Blues, a style that has greatly influenced all his later work. His love of blues also revitalized his long-dormant songwriting skills, though his writing also spans genres such as pop, folk, and country. Ron’s solo show is a mix of acoustic blues, roots, and folk. Performing about 70% original material, he also includes his distinctive adaptations of old-time blues songs. Humor is an important part of his repertoire and audiences find his satirical songs hilarious.
In 1999, Ron’s first CD, "A Skinny Old White Man Sings The Blues", was runner-up for Blues Album of the Year in the Just Plain Folks songwriters’ awards. 2001 saw Ron voted “one of BC’s top emerging songwriters” by mentors Ron Hynes and Mae Moore at the BC Festival of the Arts. Later that year, he released his second CD, "Pure Blues Guy", which CanadianBlues.ca called “a masterpiece of creative blues writing.” Ron’s third CD, "Live Plus One", was recorded live at various venues in 2003. It also features a studio recording of his most-requested song:“This Is Not Spam”.
Ron has toured throughout BC, and parts of Alberta, playing bars, coffeehouses, house concerts, festivals and theatres to very enthusiastic response. He is an engaging and personable entertainer who presents a smooth, polished show. Self-managed, self-booked, self-financed and self-promoted, he has proved able to put in the time and effort to sustain his reputation (including his fan club/mailing list with over 300 names). He’s done print, radio, and TV interviews, has received widespread airplay of his CDs (particularly “This Is Not Spam”), and has been reviewed favorably by both indie and major media.
