Bio
Susie Keynes is the quintessential rocker girl who chooses a guitar for its tone first and then for it’s colour. When both are happening it is a very good day.
Having notched up a lot of the last decade touring, performing and creating with international festival highlight, FRUIT, the fiery redhead from this superbly acclaimed group now brings her hot new band to the stage.
Introducing REDHEAD: a bright, tight three-piece featuring Susie Keynes on electric and acoustic guitars, Yanya Boston on drums and CJ Rhodes on bass guitar. Together this snappy combination delivers a sonic-punch that shifts between acoustic plaintiveness and the explosion of raucous girl-rock.
‘Ordinary Girl’ is REDHEAD’s debut release.
Teaming up with UK producer, Paul Gomersall (Blur, Kate Bush, George Michael) REDHEAD’s vision was to hang this collection of songs on an organic framework of guitars, drums and bass allowing Susie’s stand alone vocal to deliver each well crafted tune.
Be it the straight-forward opening crunch of Another Way Home, the gorgeous scenic swing of Grow No Older or the electric pocket-rock of Almost Lost My Way this album has broad appeal.
Demonstrating her maturity as an artist, Susie diverts the listener from the quick fix pop moment of title=track ‘Ordinary Girl’ to the more anthemic and crucial life themes exemplified in ‘Cherish’, an ode to a friend who lost her battle with breast cancer and then the stunning, string laden ‘Sorry Song’ – written in response to the national apology to the Australian indigenous population. Powerful stuff.
Ordinary Girl is a surprising and utterly enjoyable journey. Strong songs lasooed by a tight and edgy band. If this is to be genrefied let it be songwriter rock. There are meanings and stories being told here that reach far beyond their ear-tugging hooks.
In the words of this particular songwriter – “If it rocks us – so be it, if it gently moves us – so be it. Ultimately it connects us.”
This is REDHEAD. Be prepared for the journey with this none-to-ordinary band.
