For those who know me, Henning Stumm on a more personal level know that I am very passionate about sharing my love for drumming. I have giving clinics, workshops, master classes and continue to teach a selective group of students privately. I take great pride in teaching this art form and always take delight when I can light that passion in my students. I was very surprised however when I recieved the following e-mail a few days ago from Heather at thumbtack. Congratulations! A view weeks ago I read an article on the issue: has the internet destroyed the music business. In that article both sides were heavily represented with big names and heavy weights of the industry. A heated discussion in form of comments followed. This is definetly a important subject that has effected all of us that are in one form or another involved in and around the music industry. This is not the first time this question has come up, which made me decide to share my expierence through all this with you. I think that my many years in the business and long track record allows me to shed some light on the topic and raise some valid points. One thing is clear that the internet most definitely has influenced and shaped the music industry and the life of the people envolved in it to a degree that we never expierenced before. Many people are suffering from it and in extreme cases it has even destroyed careers. I can also tell you that it has become harder to generate a decent income and maintain a full time career in the music. Think about it, without the finaciell backing of the record companies, who can afford to hire professional composers, arrangers, real life studio musicians? So now they are losing work. That's bad for the music. What about the CD disc manufactures that employed many people? With more and more music being made available for downloads, CD's are almost exstinqued. that equals many job losses. The list goes on and on. While it has become easier for the artist to promote themselfs and get their music heard on one hand, on the other, the internet is being flooded with crappy productions and music that should never been "out there" in the first place - I am not talking about censurship of styles, I'm talking about quality control. However, there are as many "good" things that come with the change as there are "bad". we can sit here for the rest of our lives to discuss this back and forth, the matter of fact is, that the internet will remain a permanent fixture in our lives and we have to accept this and make the neccesary adjustments. We have to create new income sources within that and broaden our horizion. We have to get creative once again in the search for new ways to regulate the flow and exchange of our creative properties to prevent theft and misuse of our music. Live continues and you gotta be in it to win it. let's keep a positive attitude and let's find a way to make it work for us, so we can continue focusing on making a decent living bringing great music for the people to enjoy One Love Henning Stumm drummer, composer, producer
