My band and I had the good fortune to play the Emerald Lounge on friday August 24th. Unfortunately our only audience was a few friends, wives, girlfriends, and the other two bands with whom we shared the stage. Still, it was a lot of fun both because we played really well and the sound in there is amazing both on and (we're told) off the stage. Andrew, the sound guy there, does a terrific job of dialing it in so sweetly! We shared the stage with Wash Hollow (another band from Asheville), and Daniel Ellsworth and the Great Lakes from Nasheville. Both bands were great and over all the three of us made for a very eclectic evening of music. I continued the party the following two nights by going to Charlotte to see two of my favorite bands. My Morning Jacket on saturday and Phish on sunday. Both shows were incredible! What a treat to see two of my favorite bands after having played with my own. The only thing I would change would be to see those bands first and then play with my band so that i might channel their energy some how!
Just thinking about last week and thought I'd write quick note to say how much fun we had at our CD release party. We had a great turnout and the audience was fantastic! Jeff Markham warmed everyone up for us by sufficiently rocking our faces with his very original edgy sound. Rob had the sound perfectly mixed and it was a real treat. Then we took the stage and the sound up there was perfect! It felt so good to hear everything so clearly: Mike's slinky bass lines, Springs digging into the backbeat, Lenny ticklin' the ivories and making that organ scream, and Forrest flat out wailing on lead guitar. I am a lucky guy to have such a great band behind me. Can't wait to do it again, hopefully sooner than later.
Welcome folks to a new chapter in the life of Naren! I'm very excited, not only because I finished my record but because I’ve found some people who are also excited about my music. I have a band! Yes they are all busy and I will probably have to find people to fill in from time to time but I have a core group who are willing to put in as much time as their schedules allow. Pretty sweet eh? Right now I’m trying to figure out everyone’s schedules and trying to nail us down to at least one day before the new year. Gotta get the ball rolling a little bit at least. Well, I just sent off the graphics and paid for duplication today also. So I should have the physical CD in hand in a couple of weeks. YES!!!
Well the last couple of weeks in May weren't very productive for me. two weeks ago we didn't have much time so we spent a few hours listening back to everything that will be on the record and deciding exactly what needs to be added for each track. I've got a guitar solo yet to put down for the end of "Beginning of the End", Some vocals to fix for a couple of songs, we will probably add a shaker here, a tambourine there to certain tracks. So you can see how we are so close yet so far. Last week I re-sang the vocals for "Beginning of the End" and they sound a helluva lot better. That was one of the first songs we worked on and I think I'm singing much differently now. I'm not sure what it is but I feel like I'm more relaxed, like I'm finding my voice more easily now. I'm sure a big part of it is that I'm more used to the space and the process now, but I think it also has to do with the fact that I've been playing out a lot more. I wasn't able to get over there this week so I'm looking forward to getting back in there next week and knocking out some more stuff.
Had a great couple of sessions this week. Tuesday we worked on mixing Close to Heaven. A couple of weeks ago I had a Steel Pedal guitar player come in and put down some tracks and tuesday was the first time i'd listened to them since the day they were recorded. It sounds amazing! Then wednesday Brian came in and put down some trumpet harmonies on a song called Don't Tell Me. This is the same guy who put the wonderful piano and organ tracks on Best of You and a few others. I don't know what this guy can't do! So it looks like I only have, at most, a couple of more sessions before I will be done tracking. Then it will be time to mix so that will take awhile...hence the title of this post. Getting pretty excited though!
