The magic of collaboration

I had the good fortune to spend last weekend with twenty songwriters from around the world. Fawmstock III, the retreat I organized with my bandmates in Two Johns and A Nancy, brought together people of all ages, genres and musical specializations to collaborate and share our work. We met up at Bethel Horizons in Dodgeville and set up writing and recording rooms in the larger bedrooms. Wherever you walked, someone was brainstorming a chorus, looking for the bridge chords, or offering a harmony. I learned some of the special challenges of writing in a large group, and got some satisfying songs writing in smaller ones. There were good meals, laughter, audio and video recordings exchanged. The Johns and I had the satisfaction of pulling off a successful organizing effort. And the whole experience was tremendously regenerating. I'm looking forward to next year (likely in Emlenton, Pa.) already. If this sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, drop me a note with any questions.

62 songs and counting

Since July 4, I've been participating in the "50 Songs in 90 Days" challenge, which runs through October 1 and includes songwriters from all over the world. So far I've written 62 songs, and am still going! I'll be posting most of them on my website, and some of them here.
