When the subject falls on groove metal you can't go without the grand old bands of the genre like Pantera, Anthrax, Sepultura, Exhorder and the like. “OUTLIAR is an American Thrash-influenced Metal band, formed in 2004. After eight years a first release is now available via the band and CDBaby at this link. Titled “Provoked To Anger”, the album was recorded at The Basement Studio in Winston-Salem, NC by Jamie King (e.g. BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME, BLOODSOAKED, …) and released on the 24th January 2012. “Outliar - Provoked to Anger (2012) Say what you want about the American South (Be careful though. It's my homeland), but the region's metal scenes undoubtedly have their own subtle nuances in their general sounds that have really begun to distinguish them from other scenes around the globe. Outliar have been around since 2004 and hail from Cary, North Carolina. They also clearly do what they do extremely well. I've seen this band given the dubious "Groove Metal" label, but don't let that deter you from discovering the truth. This is some quite tasty thrash metal with a few death metal influences peppered in, and the result is indeed a very groovy album, albeit not overly fast, that you'll want to hear again and again. The overall presentation and incredibly tight riffing even reminds me of The Haunted and sometimes even Lamb of God's best stuff from time to time. “Outliar - Provoked To Anger - A Groove Filled Rager! One of the things that makes groove metal so appealing, is the catchy guitar work, it’s one of the few types of metal that have hooks; like pop songs. This album is full of’em. When Provoked To Anger was blasting through my headphones my head was bobbing to the chuggy guitar work. It was the sort of guitar work that would bring you in, and not let you go; your whole being would feel the grooves. This is key. The guitars felt and sounded like they were being played by these monstrous beings, and this was good. Also, another plus for this album was that they took it easy on the breakdowns, and the pinch harmonics. Too many groove bands over use these elements and it just sounds terrible, Outliar used these elements tastefully, and it really showed throughout the entire album. Q: Love the tunes Guys! What is your favorite venue in Raliegh? Coolest show you have played there?

A: Thanks, guys! Digging your stuff as well for sure. Our favorite venue in Raleigh is the Berkeley Cafe. We've only played there once so far, but the sound was great and it's a cool joint. We played there with Mensrea and Mobile Death Camp a few months ago and it raged. The Lincoln Theater is also a great place, but a much larger venue so unless it's a bigger bill it's a tough place to fill. The coolest show we've ever played in general was when we opened for Havok and Skeletonwitch last year. \m/
