About

The Ninja Funk Orchestra approaches jazz from the angle of a indie rock band. Comprised of tenor sax player Gordon Hyland, guitarist Neil Whitford, pianist Stephen Harmelink, bassist Andrew Roorda, and drummer Mackenzie Longpre, the group set out to create and unique space on the Toronto scene with the "Concord Funk Jam," designed to bring together rock and jazz instrumentalist, singers and freestylers as well as DJ's and World Music specialists. Through this weekly interaction, the style of Ninja Funk was born as a blending of improvisation and hard rock with dance-funk.  Each of the band members composes and arranges for the group, drawing on influences from a wide variety of sources including Void, Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone, David Binney, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Michael Brecker, Michael Jackson, George Clinton, and James Brown
Since the Concord Funk Jam, Ninja Funk Orchestra has expanded into a number of collaborations and performing opportunities.  They are currently acting as the house band for the Avenue Bar of the prestigious Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Toronto.  They traveled to South America in February 2008 to help pioneer the first ever Canada-Chile music festival to play to enthusiastic local crowds.  They have performed during the Montreal Jazz Festival with local favourites Skyhook and are currently working on a southern Ontario tour.  The long list of collaborations includes singer-songwriters Coco-Love Alcorn, Amy Lee Owens, indie bands Yuka, and Dan Fournier and the Pill as well as jazz artists such as the Worst Pop Band Ever and Jim Lutz.
Ninja Funk Orchestra released their first full length studio recording on April 16th, 2008, merely one year after beginning the project.  The album, recorded in a single session, is described as an "explosive blend of improvisation and hard rock, dance and quirky humour." It has already received local airplay on CIUT 89.5 FM and is currently available at the band's website.
The members of Ninja Funk Orchestra constantly strive to enhance the depth of their music in an intellectual way without removing themselves from a mainstream audience.  Their approach to music attempts to bridge the gap between the jazz realm and the idea of 'feel-good music.'  Stay tuned to www.ninjafunkorchestra.com for continual updates.
