Q: As an African American artist, what is your plan to overcome the adversity that is clouding musicians today?
A: As an artist, you have to be able to reach all walks of life. Me as an African American artist I also rap about my personal experiences in life as well as what I've seen. The difference is I reach out to the same streets I'm talking to. I have Thanksgiving and Christmas fundraisers to help families in need. I also hold rap conferences for the youth. We as artists tend to not understand the impact our lyrics have on our youth. At this conference we answer questions that the youth and parents have about our lyrics. We may not always see eye to eye about certain topics, but its a better way for us as artists to explain what we mean when we format our thoughts into music. I also have programs such as "The Streets R Weak". This program is to deter our youth from the street life that is so glorified in music today. We have speakers that come and talk to the youth and share their trials and tribulations about what the street life has left them with. Many of us as youngsters didn't have programs like this to deter us from that life. We as artists do have a responsibility to what we say and do. So we cant just do a handful and think that we've played our part. We have to continuously do more to change the circumstances that plague our communities. They are listening to us, so we have to say more than just what they already know. Produce music about love, the struggle, the mistakes that one's have made and where they lead you. I have have tracks like that. So that's my plan to overcome the adversity. Continue to reach out to the streets I'm talking to and about. Continue to help the ones in need, show our young black men a different path instead of the corner, and continue to define "hustle" as a positive and legit form of accumulating currency. If we have more artist out here that did this, that cloud would eventually evaporate and shine light on what we really are out in these streets doing. And that's trying to make a difference.
