Bio

Philadelphia-born Lemar Debois, aka R&B artist “L” Debois, grew up in a small city called Bloomsdale. “L”, influences include Jimmy Hendrix, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Miles Davis, Bootsy Collin, Louis Armstrong & Isley Brothers just to name a few. “L” performed in many well-known Philly nightspots, until he impressed several A&R Def Jam representatives and President/Vice President Kevin Liles and Lyor Cohen. “L” went on to recorded with producers Raphael Saadiq, Mike City, Chucky Thompson, and No I.D. However, in the aftermath of staff cutbacks, “L” and Def Soul amicably parted ways. As a dynamic artist, who plays many instruments he continues to create inspirational music for the soul.

About

Nivri Concept, Inc. (Online Magazine) by: Cindy Irvin  August 27, 2009

1.At anytime were you ever in a group? If so, when and what was the name of the group?.Did you have a album/cd with the group? Why did you break up?

 Answer:

Yes. I actually started out in groups. Too many to name them all. Lol!! But I was about age 12 when I put together my first group. I remember the name of one of my last groups being“Style”. What a corny name. Lol!! We never had a cd out.

But I just got tired of being in groups having to worry about people practising and putting a certain amount of effort in. That’s why I chose to be solo.

2.As a solo artist what were your greatest hits?

Answer:

Haven’t had anything out yet that was on the hit’s charts or anything but people tend to love songs like “Everybody Needs”,“Hurt so much”, “Loving You”, Stay Strong, and Dream Woman.

3.Are you currently on a major label/independent label? If so, Which label?

Answer:

No. I am currently unsigned to any major record labels.

4.What are the titles and year of your past CD's?

Answer:

The past cd I have put out is “L” Debois Acoustic Voyage”.

4.Are you making a new CD? If so, what is the title of the CD? and When will you be releasing the CD?

Answer:

I am currently working on some new material to be releases soon. Haven’t decided on the title yet because of new songs that have been written.

5.Are you working with other producers and songwriters? If so, who?

Answer:

I am currently writing songs with mostly people within my own circle at the moment to create something special. I am also working with a couple of producers called Muzic Doctorz ... www.myspace.com/muszicdoctorz

7.Does the change in music over the last 20 years concern you..how/why?

Answer:

Yes. Music has changed a lot for me. Mainly the content. It seems that no thought goes into much of what is out there and many moral aspects of life have disappeared from the lyrics. We now see women being disrespected more than ever, and an all time high of ignorance being spread. It is time for a return of consciousness especially among the African American communities where these very poisonous ideas are being flushed into.

8.How do you feel about the music industry today?

Answer:

I feel that many people are starting to wake up more business wise and it has been a higher rise of entrepreneurs rather than slaves. But there still must be a balance to the point one is just not simply willing to sell his or her soul for the dollar.

9.Why did you leave Def Jam?

Answer:

After 2 and a half years we both mutually agreed that it was time to move on. I learned a lot being there though. Everything is timing.

10. What direction did the label want to go with your music? and What direction did you want to go with your music/style? They saw me as a modern day babyface.

Answer:

But I had more to me than just that.

I also had more of a raw side of me people haden’t seen that combined a lot of funk in my music which are on songs like “Help Yourself”

11.What are some of your musical influences?

Answer:

So many to name. Some include Donny Hathway, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Jimmi Hendrix, and Prince.

12. What is the biggest mistake you as an artist has made? and Why?

Answer:

I would say one of the biggest mistakes I made was not purchasing a home and investing more when I was on Defjam. That way I could have had a consistant place for my studio at the time. But I believe it was still God’s decree and I am patient with that.

13.What Genre of music do you play?

Answer:

I do many different styles such as soul, Blues/ rock, funk, jazz, etc… But they are fuzed together in my style.

 14.Are you still touring?

Answer:

I am touring on and off.

15. What is the most memorable moment as an artist you can remember?

Answer:

One of the most memorable moments was performing for BabyFace. I remember getting the feeling of hoping (he himself as a great artist) would say something good about me. And he actually told me I had the best fausetto he ever heard.

16. Have you been doing any behind the scenes work in the meantime? or any other projects?

Answer:

Yes. I have been doing many commercials. A few playing right now are for “cricket”(Respect) and a “Dell” (lollipop).  You can find some of them at www.youtube.com/ldeboiscommercials

17.What do you want people to know about  "L" Debois?

Answer:

I want them to know that I am more than just an a musician and singer. I believe what I do also comes with great responsibility to the world. So therefore putting out the right song lyrics to bring about positive change is necessary. Along with feeding the poor, teaching the youth, and doing good deeds all for the sake of pleasing my Creator.

18.How can your fans keep up with you? (email, twitter, website, etc.....)

 Answer:

They can keep up with me on www.reverbnation.com/ldebois, facebook.com, www.youtube.com/ldebois, and be on the look out for a new site about to launch soon, God willing.

 19. Who have you worked with? and who would you want to work with in the future?

 Answer:

I have worked with producers like Chucky Thompson, Raphael Saadique, Mike City, Brandon Howard, Jake and the Fatman, and Ron Fair. Currently working with Muzic Doctorz, (www.myspace.com/muzicdoctorz)

I have only maybe a few specific people such as Indie Arie, and Alicia Keys. But I would like to mainly work with anyone who is like minded in terms of conscious song lyrics and not wanting to just talk about things that will not make change in the society. I feel there needs to be a serious rethinking of many directions on whether one is causing more harm than good.
