Yilis del Carmen Suriel is a Dominican American printmaker and musician based in the North East. Her current work in print and installation focuses on the interpretation of carnival culture and identity through inter personal connections. Following the opening there will be a performance by the Ladies of Midnight Blue. Exhibition Dates Friday July 5 – 31, 3pm- 11pm.
Following on from the Tyne Carnival we have a wonderful full afternoon of specially curated live Latino music, DJs and food stalls! The day will see London headliners Cumbé take to the stage with a great show of Afro, Tropical, Colombian, Cumbia rhythms with colourful traditional costumes and dance for one vibrant Colombian spectacle. The band have previously appeared at Latitude Festival and performed on BBC 3. They will be supported by a special live performance by North East favourites Burundanga, a percussive set from Hannabiell and Yilis as well as the up and coming Brassy B. We will also announce the winner of the best KING and QUEEN from the Tyne Carnival! Remember if you want to take part in the carnival this year then there will be two FREE performance workshops on Saturday 8th and Saturday 22nd June held at The Stand, High Bridge there is no excuse to get involved!
