Q: What is the history in connection with your song "Stand Up Proud"? I shared the song - hence my reason for the question - Deryck Sterne.
A: Stand Up Proud was written as part of a suite of songs which collectively tell the story of the Peterloo Massacre which took place in Manchester, UK, on August 16th. 1819. It's a long story but the basic fact was that a crowd of political reformists were set upon by local militia whilst attending a meeting. The meeting was designed as a pic nic with the result that many women and children were caught up in the days events. The song refers to Peter's Field which at the time was a large park in Manchester and which gave its name to the tragedy. If you would like to know more, please let me know
