Bio
Gabby Hayz is a four-piece band that comprises two professional firefighters from Opelousas, Larry Moreau (guitars) & Ken Morel(bass); an Opelousas high school teacher, Paul Mouton (drums); and, from Abbeville, Paul Piazza (vocals, harmonica).
Starting as a regular jam session between friends many years back, Gabby Hayz finally evolved into a true band with a recording project in early 2005 when Moreau, Morel, and Mouton decided to try their hand at recording some of the song ideas they had been kicking around for years. After the recording sessions began, Piazza, whom the other members of Gabby Hayz met at an open jam @ 307 in Downtown Lafayette, La., rounded out the lineup by contributing soulful, powerful vocals and harmonica parts.
About
Although some bands describe their styles by making comparisons between themselves and other groups, Gabby Hayz cannot be pigeonholed this way. Despite being from the Acadiana area of Louisiana (the recognized mecca of Cajun and Zydeco bands, which are more plentiful than mosquitoes), they are different from most bands there because they do not play these styles of music; nor do they play country music.
Simply put, Gabby Hayz is a rock band. However, all four band members having very diverse musical influences (everything from The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and The Who to Robin Trower, Blues Traveler and King's X) results in a sound that is not easily categorized due to the broad scope of sounds and styles brought into this project. To fully understand the Gabby Hayz sound, one must HEAR Gabby Hayz's music. A melding of many influences, it is unmistakably rock music with hints of southern and classic rock (but with a bit of folk and Celtic influence as well).
Entirely self-produced at End Of The Road Studios in Opelousas, their premier CD entitled Keepsake was recently released. This CD encompasses 13 original songs plus one Beatles cover. Covering diverse sonic territory, the songs range from heavy (“War Within,” “Dealers of Decay” and “Sins & Signs”) to more introspective and acoustic-based music (“Keepsake,” “Montague County” and “June 9th”).
