“Back Porch Mary have released their fifth album, and it contains more of the grassroots goodness we have come to expect from these guys. With a sound that falls somewhere between Drive By Truckers and Cross Canadian Ragweed, Back Porch Mary play songs filled with powerful musical hooks and intelligent lyrics. Great songs like the refreshingly positive “No Bad News Today” and the catchy “I’m a Soldier,” and the ‘60’s vibe of “Fast Car,” every song is good in its own way. “Drove Her to Drinkin” is very reminiscent of the Tom Petty sound, so good - and the pedal steel laced “Shot in the Dark” is brilliant as well. “The Vegas Song” is a real hoot lyrically, with some lightning fast guitar pickin.’ I can’t say enough good about this album or about Back Porch Mary. “ From the moment their new album LIFE IS NOW sets forth with its groove-laden guitar on “No Bad News Today” you can tell that you’re in for something awesomely different. “Fast Car” is a prime example as you can see with its elongated intro these songs are built for a musicians career onstage, not for a quick flavor-of-the-month whirl through the Nashville machine. The guitar tones are different, the tempos are different. Even the song structures are different. Vocally Mike Krug emerges as a newfound, Jayhawk twisted Tom Petty and that is frighteningly evident on the song “Dry Here In This Town.” In fact BPM is so much Petty that more than once as I listened to this album I caught myself doing the Tom Petty up-and-down bob. The only bad thing Life Is Now has going for it is w/o a major label machine behind it it’s hard to get to the true country music loving masses. “ Songs such as No Bad News Today discuss experiences that the blue collar worker might face on any given day. The charm in this song is the positive outlook that is portrayed by the lyrics. T Drove Her to Drinkin is one such song, this track talks about love gone wrong despite the best intentions. Next to You is about love that is so strong that it conquers all that time brings. Shot in The Dark is a song about finding new love and breaking down the walls that can prevent so many people find exploring a possible connection. If you are looking for a classic Country experience, these songs will provide plenty of that for you with their perfect arrangement on this CD. My favorite song on this album is Dry Here In This Town, a song about going through hard times and struggling while others around you seem to be doing so well. While this is a perception that many people have when dealing with black clouds, others are likely having similar experiences. ”

“ So, needless to say, this band is not one that you can easily put in a little 4 + 4 box. Those styles are all fully represented here, but they are done so in such a way that they are able to mix them all up into an interesting combination where all are featured at once! Mike Krug, Joe Miller, and Ryan Kyle comprise the trio, which is one of the more unique sounding acts I have heard of in some time. The song that I think best personifies what the trio is all about is “You Don’t Know About Me.” I wouldn’t call it pure Country, pure Alternative, or pure Americana, but rather a combination of all three. I think it could easily go in all three stylistic directions. “No Bad News Today” is a well-written song, and the lyrics are quite humorous, which is a trademark of their sound, also coming to light on the hilarious ”Drove Her To Drinkin,” which could very well be a highlight here.”
