NEWS: On February 24 2014, Mental Monky Ballet released their EP "Breaking The Law" and the included video single "Into The Open", on New York label Applehead Films & Records, Rockbox Records.
Mental Monky Ballet plays broken rock poetry, telling stories about a crazy, dark and incomprehensible yet beautiful, shimmering and spiritual world. Their influences are many, but the band mainly combines tribal vibe with pumping and trashy sounds from postpunk and grunge, coloured with melancholic and dreamy sounds.
We want to wake people up and make them use and be fine with the fact that the world is equally about building up and tearing down, equally about the beautiful and the ugly, equally about harmony and chaos.
They stand for diversity, tolerance and to stand ones ground.
They are four female- and two male musicians in the band. They are NOT a “girlband” but unusually enough a band with more female musicians than male. 50% of the music is also written and produced by a woman (lead vocalist Vivi). The band has its own label and publishing company owned by a woman (lead vocalist Vivi). This raises eyebrows.
The age span in the band is somewhat odd too. The members are born in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. If they include Jan Fretman, it’s actually the 50s too. They love and respect each other equally like brothers and sisters and nobody actually notices the age span at all. They all just have lots of fun working together. The criteria for being a MMB band member are the vibe, mentality and approach to life and music.
Some of the topics are meant to challenge the prejudice against mental and personality disorders and point out the need for understanding destructive behavior as just a face in the personal development. Today a lot of people are still just as scared of this as people were of witchcraft centuries ago. The title song “Breaking The Law” is about a burning topic: social disobedience and personal responsibility. The song “Club 27” was written just a couple of days after Amy Winehouse death 2.5 years ago. It’s a celebration to Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain and other musical personalities forming the mythical 27 Club, strongly associated with the hard and destructive “rock'n roll lifestyle".
Stockholm based band Mental Monky Ballet, was founded in Febuary 2013 by leadsinger / songwriter / producer Vivi Lundström and co-producer/songwriter Jan Fretman.
The band played their first gig at the beautiful outdoor arena Kungsträdgården in the center of Stockholm on June 8 2013. Currently they are in the middle of their first album project together and at the same time performing the surroundings of Stockholm and different parts of Sweden.
Bandmembers: ViVi - lead vocals, songwriting and production, Anna Wennersten - keyboard and backing vocals,
Nino Prekratic - guitars, Håkan Englund - drums, Maxa Fon Pashayeva - bass and Linnea Simon - backing vocals.
Production, recordings, engineering, mastering, and instruments are done by co-producer Jan Fretman and Vivi Lundström at their BrightLight Studio studio and then performed live by the band. Fretman is also engineering the live shows and contributes with the final touch to make the bands distinct sound really shimmer at the shows.
Prior to Mental Monky Ballet, ViVi performed as a solo artist, and released her debut album UNREWINDED on her own label BrightLight Music in February 2012. The record recieved good reviews and airplay followed by a tour of Sweden.
