Chadwyck “Dehva” Gillings developed a love for music at the age of ten due to his mother’s passion for Lovers Rock and the souls of Jamaican music. Theres not much more to be said as he would then venture off into the depths of musical experiences. He remembers hearing the likes of Sugar Minott, Gregory Issacs and Beresford Hammond distinctly as having an effect on how he later consumed and produced from here out. Dehva as his name suggests stands for his ravenous behaviour towards his goals and aspirations. As such African Roots sound system which was his neighbours champion sound would be the perfect place to listen to and generally getting involved in music. A DJ would be born. His neighbour of the same age would steal his father’s records to play on Dehva’s set up they managed to put together from unscrupulous activities around his community. From here on he would become a respected sound handler within his community. By 2001 he would be trusted to encounter clashes and light up dances without a mistake. Even though only 13 he and his friends would still attend church and take time out and DJ after sunday school. By the age of 17 he was fully into composing his own songs along with his friends from church and school. Taking the name due his straightforward approach to everything as observed by his partners in crime. This would come to play out explicitly in his passion for music. “So Wi Roll” on the Reverse Di Ting riddim would be his genesis creation vocally, done by Seanizzle, a childhood acquaintance. Getting the attention of local and foreign producers would bring regular creations for the newcomer with an aggressive voice. More Money took the opportunity to manage him as a future star of Dancehall Reggae. From here his talent would grace the likes of Fams House as production would now become become necessary. This new venture would produce an 8 track mixtape which marked his debut to the streets of Jamaica as unique artist. Producer (X)Treme from Pon DI Spot saw the talent and decided that developing the artist would bring him into stardom. Numerous records came from this relationship, “Come Ya Gyal” is one of the noted records from this new production approach. Here in 2013 he has established his own label, Dehva House, where he himself has recorded and mixed for the best in the business.
